Kailey Faris Extended Written Response Assessment Second Grade Time Unit Clear Purpose: The purpose of this formative assessment for learning is to guide the teacher, students, and parents with information about student knowledge of time. The assessment will be given to the second grade students half way through the unit. The students will demonstrate their knowledge of elapsed time by solving two written response questions. They will use their previous knowledge of subtraction, telling time in hour and half-hour intervals. Tennessee Grade Level Expectations GLE 0206.1.4 Solve problems involving elapsed time in hour and half-hour intervals. Learning Target I can find the elapsed time when given the start and end time. Directions before the assessment: Over the past few weeks we have been learning about key concepts of time. We recently learned how to find the elapsed time when given a start and end time. We moved to finding the end time, when given the start time and the elapsed time. At last we learned how to find the start time, when given the end time and the elapsed time. (Teacher puts the three targets on the white board.) Today you will be completing a written response assessment that will help us identify your understanding of elapsed time. (Hand out the assessment to the students). Please put your name and date on the top of your assessment. When you are done please put your pencil down so I know you are ready to move on. You will answer two questions. For each question, follow the directions carefully and use complete sentences. Each question will ask you draw to a picture to help solve the problem and remember you can use the analog and digital stamps if you need help drawing your clock. (Hand out the rubrics to the students (each rubric will be printed on a half sheet of paper and then the two rubrics will be stapled together, therefore the students can review the rubrics after the assessment)) Each question will be worth five points and when you are done with the assessment you will need to score yourself using a rubric for each question. The rubrics are just like the ones we have been using all year long. For each extended written response question, you will give yourself a 5, 3, or 1. You will need to explain why you gave yourself the score. Please be honest and take your time. (Students will put their rubrics in the upper right corner of their desks.) The first question is a prompt. (Students will point to question one on their assessment and follow along during the directions). Read through Mrs. Faris daily schedule chart and answer the question on the bottom of the chart. Remember to follow directions carefully and use complete sentences. The second question is a scenario. (Students will turn to the second page.) Read the word problem carefully and follow the directions. Remember to use complete sentences and thoroughly explain how your solved the problem just like we have been practicing.

If you have any questions during the assessment, raise your hand and I will come over to help you. You can now get out your offices (colorful dividers they receive at the beginning of the year for each assessment). Remember you have as much time as you need and after you are done with your assessment, please complete your rubrics. When you know you have completed the assessment and rubrics thoroughly, put down your office and place your assessment under your folder, then you can get out your math challenge packet and work quietly! I know you will all do amazing on this assessment. Show me what you know because you are all superstars!

Rubric for Question # 1 Use the rubric below to assess how you did on question number one. Give yourself a score of 5, 3, or 1. 5 points (I got it) o I read the chart and found the correct amount of time Mrs. Faris had to plan by using the correct start and end time. o I included a picture with two clocks (analog or digital) with the correct start and end time and I inserted the elapsed time. o I thoroughly explained in complete sentences how I solved the elapsed time problem. 3 points (Im heading in the right direction) o I read the chart, but I found the incorrect amount of time Mrs. Faris had to plan. o I included a picture with two clocks (analog or digital), but they did not show the correct start and end time. o I explained how I solved the elapsed time problem, but I did not use complete sentences. 1 point (I still need more practice) o I incorrectly read the chart and found the incorrect amount of time Mrs. Faris had to plan. o I did not include a picture with two clocks (analog or digital) or I did not show the correct start and end time. o I briefly explained or did not explain at all how I solved the elapsed time problem.

Accommodations for Diverse Learners Students will have unlimited time on the assessment. The two students in the class that have IEPs and need their assessment read to them will take their assessment in the resource room, therefore the assessment can be read to them at their own pace. The students have a math manipulative center in the classroom and if they would like to get an analog clock from the bin they can use this during the test. The students will have analog and digital stamps in the middle of each group to use on the assessment if they do not feel comfortable drawing the clocks by hand. I have one student who gets overwhelmed with assessments; therefore I break the assessment down into individual pages. The student will complete page one and turn in the page before moving onto the next page of the assessment. After the student has completed the three questions, then the student will be given the rubrics to complete.
