The course deals with the physical properties of common construction materials primarily metals, plastics, wood, concrete, coarse and fine aggregates, asphalt and synthetic materials; examination of material properties with respect to design and use of end product, design and control of aggregates, concrete and asphalt mixtures, principle of testing; characteristics of test; properties of materials and materials testing equipment. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to do the following: 1. Understand the range of various materials for civil engineering projects; 2. Understand relevant properties of common construction materials; 3. Understand applicable local, international and foreign standards on materials and materials testing; 4. Perform measuring, testing and evaluating the results; 5. Ability to test, measure, evaluate the best use of building and construction materials
Course Distribution Week 1 2 3 TOPICS Orientation: Principle of Fluid Mechanics Familiarization of construction materials equipment and apparatus. 1. Introduction to CE construction, materials and testing- CE materials, properties of engineering materials, selection materials and standards 2. Aggregates-Light weight, normal weight and heavy weight aggregates and properties of aggregates Experiment 1- Specific Gravity and water absorption of fine aggregate 3. Concrete and their cementations materials- Uses of concrete, cement and its types, setting and its hydration, properties of concrete, properties of fresh concrete, mixing, placing and curing, properties of hard-earned concrete and mixed design Experiment 2- Specific Gravity and water absorption of coarse aggregate Experiment 3 Making and curing concrete test specimen in the Lab. Experiment 4 Compressive strength of cylindrical concrete specimen Prelim Examination Admixtures, types of concrete and other cementation materials Experiment 5- Time of setting of hydraulic cement by Vicat needle 4. Masonry- Masonry units, mortar, grout and plaster masonry construction, properties of construction, reinforced masonry and mix proportioning and examples 5. Wood and wood products- Physical properties of wood, shrinkage and seasoning, treatment and durability, lumber sizes, types of grading, grades stamp and moisture content classification, mechanical properties and allowable values, wood products, creep and wood construction Experiment 6 Moisture content of timber

Experiment 7- Compressive strength of timber 6. Bituminous materials and mixtures-Tar and pitches, asphalt, petroleum asphalt, properties of asphalt Experiment 8 Penetration of bituminous materials Midterm Examination Asphalt grades, asphalt concrete, asphalt pavement and spray application 7. Iron and steel- Iron, steel, properties of steel, structural steel, reinforcing steel and welded wire fabric Experiment 9 Flexural strength of concrete using simple beam with center point loading 8.
