of Florida School of Teaching and Learning EDG 3377: Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science Clinical Interview Description

Students will write an analysis of a clinical interview documenting one individuals knowledge of a mathematics or science concept. The goal of this assignment is to facilitate your learning about the process of assessment and an individuals notions about a fundamental concept in mathematics or science. Your knowledge of an individuals understanding will be gained through a clinical interview (Ginsburg, 1997; Long & Ben-Hur, 1991). Note about your ANALYSIS: While you may begin by describing your experiences (e.g., step-by-step discussion of the clinical interview), you should aim toward analysis and away from pure description. You should provide assertions (i.e., summative statements resulting from analysis) based on documented evidence (e.g., raw data of the individuals work or transcriptions of individuals statements). Within the body of the text, you should support your assertions with evidence. Include the RAW data as an Appendix. Clinical Interview: Students will conduct a clinical interview to examine an individuals (secondary student or adult learner) understanding of a fundamental mathematics or science concept. Students will complete the clinical interview in several stages throughout the semester. First, students will develop a task to actively involve the person with a fundamental concept. This activity will be accompanied by and based upon a deep examination of the mathematics or science concept. Second, students will conduct a clinical interview with one individual. The interview will be activity-based and interactive. Third, students will revise the task based on what they learned during the first interview and conduct a follow-up interview with the same person. Fourth, students will analyze the data from the clinical interviews and write an in-depth report of the persons understanding of the concept. Clinical Interview I: Assessment Tasks (Max. 3 pages). Provide a plan for the assessment tasks you will use during the clinical interview. This should include: (1) Discussion of the concept based on a deep examination of the mathematics or science; (2) Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (http://www.fldoe.org/BII/Curriculum/SSS/ )include the Big Idea and Benchmark; (3) Brief description of participant (pertinent information only); (4) Detailed outline of the procedures for clinical interview including questions you will ask and details of the task; and (5) Copy of starter used for the development of the task (not included in page limitation). NOTE: The clinical interview should be completed twice. Based on an analysis of the initial interview including how your tasks and processes functioned, revise the task (this MAY involve devising additional tasks) and interview the same person a second time. Clinical Interview II: Analysis of student knowledgereport of clinical interview (Max. 5 pages). This part of the assignment is based on the idea of assessment as data collection and clinical interview (Long & Ben Hur, 1991). The goal of the case study is to learn deeply about the students mathematical or scientific understandings related to a limited content area. This report should include the following sections: 1. 2. 3. Initial impressions: A discussion of what you learned from conducting the initial interview. Modifications of your task including a rationale for the second interview procedures based on what you learned during the initial interview. Analysis of individuals knowledge: Focus your writing on mathematical or scientific knowledge including knowledge, skills, dispositions, problem-solving (and other) strategies, representations (tools) developed or used, and language used. Your goal is to provide assertions (i.e., summative statements resulting from analysis of data) about the individuals knowledge, skills, and dispositions based on evidence (e.g., descriptions of the individuals activities, artifacts from the interview, etc.). You should aim toward analysis and away from step-by-step description. Avoid describing the steps you took during the clinical interview. That is, the discussion of students understandings and abilities based on your observations should be the focus rather than providing an account of what you did. USE A PSEUDONYM WHEN REFERRING TO YOUR Participant.
