As I was reading your reflection I thought "networking." And, of course you included the networking component in your reflection. Again, this same networking is critical for a new or experienced principal. Being a principal can be a lonely job and a person needs someone to bounce questions/ideas. Exp. Field-Based Internship Reflection Form For Internship Experience Standard 1: Visionary Leadership; Standard 2: Instructional Leadership; Standard 3: Organizational Leadership; Standard 4: Collaborative Leadership; Standard 5: Ethical Leadership; Standard 6: Political Leadership Standard and Criteria 1.b Uses best practice in Program Improvement Level Elementary Time Spent 5 hour(s) Note

Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). My specific role in this experience was experienced-mentor teacher to elementary teacher. The teacher I was mentoring teaches in another state. They were from Iowa and taught here shortly before moving to out of state. The teacher was settling in good, but was having difficulty in some areas of their teaching; management, relationship building, professionalism among adults who don't act like adults, etc. Basically discussed how to improve in the areas of weakness, what worked for me, what I learned as a beginning teacher, and how to be professional at all times. Best practices included being consistent, establishing routines, and simply greeting every student and staff member. Though weekly briefings the areas of weakness were improved if not dissolved. I took the time to make sure this worked out for the teacher because I remember having someone there to talk to professionally about my daily teaching reflections, concerns, problems, etc. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). As professional educators we need to make strong networking connections and have a few educators on speed dial. Mentors are vital early in the education world. I already have made a few mentor connections for my after-teaching career. I am a strong advocate for professional development and pushing for the mentor/adviser programs for teachers in schools. Waterloo Community School District complies with the state requirements in providing a mentor to new teachers to the district for two years. I am thankful that my mentor volunteered for this program on the basis that someone did it for them. I plan on using the system as an administrator. I will carefully "pair" the teachers together when applicable. Mentor(s) Brad Schweppe The date approved by his/her lead mentor: 07/10/2012
