Melba College Senior School Course Outline

VCE ENGLISH 2013 YEAR 12 UNITS 3 AND 4


There are three Areas of Study (AoS) in Units 3 & 4 English. They are all assessed in the exam at the end of year. The three Areas of Study are: 1. Reading and Responding - in depth study of texts. 2. Creating and Presenting - studying a Context and writing your own expository, imaginative or persuasive texts relating to that context. For our purposes a context is defined as a broad overarching theme or topic that generates a wide range of ideas. 3. Using Language to Persuade analysing how writers of media texts on a current issue use language and visual elements to position readers in particular ways, and presenting your own point of view on an issue.

Text Selection
Your teachers have selected two texts from a list for Reading and Responding and two texts related to our chosen Context from a second list. The texts and the order of study are as follows: Unit 3 Reading and Responding Year of Wonders, Geraldine Brooks Unit 4 Selected Poems, Gwen Harwood

Creating and Presenting: based on the Context Encountering conflict. Life of Galileo, Bertolt Brecht Using Language to Persuade Texts Provided The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif, R. Hillman & N. Mazari Not studied in Unit 4

SCHOOL ASSSSED COURSEWORK


Over the 2 Units, coursework is worth 50% of the study score. The exam is worth the second 50%.

UNIT 3
AoS 1: Reading and Responding Outcome 1 is comprised of an analytical text response essay, and involves analysing how a text constructs meaning, conveys ideas and values, and is open to a range of interpretations. Length 800 1000 words 30% of Unit 3 Coursework

Work Requirements for Outcome 1 Completion of ALL Chapter Review Questions Completion of One Practice essay- due before the sitting of the Outcome Task

AoS 2: Creating and Responding In Outcome 2 you will draw on ideas and/or arguments suggested by our chosen Context Encountering Conflict in your own writing, for a specified audience and purpose. In addition, you will need to discuss and analyse decisions you have made about form, purpose, language, audience and context in the form of a written explanation In this unit, this outcome will be comprised of one extended folio piece in either the imaginative, expository or persuasive genre. Text: Life of Galileo, Bertolt Brecht Total length: 900 - 1200 words 30% of Unit 3 coursework

Work Requirement for Outcome 2Completion of a written response, with explanatory statement, in TWO of the following forms Creative/Imaginative Expository Persuasive

AoS 3: Using Language to Persuade. Outcome 3 involves 2 tasks. Part A- A comparative written analysis of the use of persuasive language in 3 or more persuasive texts that debate a current issue in the Australian media. Length: 1000 1200 words. Part B- Present a sustained and reasoned point of view, in oral form, on a current issue of the students choice. Length: 6-8 minutes Each task will be worth 20%. The SAC total is 40% of Unit 3 Coursework.

Work Requirements for Outcome 3 Two practice Comparative Persuasive Language Analysis pieces (1000 words each) on issues and articles as handed out by the class teacher An extended planning page of notes showing references to research for the Persuasive Oral

UNIT 4
In Unit 4 only Areas of Study 1 and 2 are assessed by School Coursework. AoS 1: Reading and Responding This task requires you to develop and justify a detailed interpretation of the text in an extended text response essay (1000 words) 50% of Unit 4 Coursework.

Work Requirements for Outcome 1 Completion of ALL Review Questions and Tasks Completion of One Practice essay- due before the sitting of the Outcome Task

AoS 2: Creating and Presenting On the same Context as in unit 3, you will write one sustained written text (imaginative, expository or persuasive) created for a specific audience and context, with a written explanation of decisions about form, purpose, language, audience and context. Text: The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif, R. Hillman & N. Mazari Length: 1000- 1200 words

Work Requirement for Outcome 2Completion of three written responses, with explanatory statement in at least two of the following forms Creative/Imaginative Expository Persuasive

THE EXAM The end of year exam covers all 3 Areas of Study. Section A: Text Response You will write on one of the two texts studied. Section B: Writing in Context You will write about the selected Context for a nominated audience and purpose. You must use ideas from at least one of the Context texts studied. Section C: Analysis of Language Use You will analyse language and visual elements in unseen persuasive texts. The exam is worth 50% of the study score
