Lesson Plan Containment Mini Q Day 1 Student Objectives:

Ben Kwedar 2/3/2013

Students will analyze the issues that framed the debate on the US response to the Soviet missiles in Cuba. Students will be able to work cooperatively within groups to organize coherent, persuasive presentations. Students will be able to think in an historical context and form an argument on the merits and pitfalls on the different courses of action JFK could have taken during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Content Standards: 16.A.5a Analyze historical and contemporary developments using methods of historical
inquiry (pose questions, collect and analyze data, make and support inferences with evidence, report findings).

Materials/Resources/Technology Needed: Smartboard Choices on Cuban Missile Crisis Worksheets o October 1962: The Moment of the Decision for everyone o Presenting your Option in colored folders for option groups o President Kennedy in other folder for Presidential group Overhead projector Group List Writing Utensils Historical Imagination Time

Start of Class: Teacher will put up picture of JFK on the Smart Board. After taking time to greet students by name at the door, one teacher will take attendance. The other instructor will introduce the Cuban Missile Crisis Choices, 2 day activity. The Choices program has been used before in this class, so the group format should not be completely unfamiliar with students. Introduction of Lesson: The teacher will explain the general format of the 2 day plan. -2 days long Day 1: -Individually read October 1962: The Moment of the Decision. -Then split into four groups, prepare for tomorrows presentation/debate. Day 2: Presentation Teacher will have students read background essays on their own

Then will split the class into 4 pre-assigned groups. -each group will send someone up to get a randomly colored folder -folders represent 3 different scenarios that EXCOMM (Presidents advisors) recommended to JFK -and one folder for JFK group -Scenario/EXCOOMM groups will answer questions together after doing directed reading activities. Afterwards will elect Group director, multiple security advisors, Soviet Experts, and historians. Co teachers will explain roles and project/write them on board. Group director- responsible for organizing presentation of groups option Security advisor- responsible for explaining why your option best addresses the security challenges facing the US in Cuba Soviet Expert- responsible for explaining why your option which best serves US interests in regard to diplomacy with the USSR. Historian- responsible for explaining how lessons of history justify the Position of your option. For JFK Group, each member will have to read synopsis of each situation and come up with two questions to ask each scenario advisor (6 in total). Lesson Instruction:

Groups will read the worksheet specific to their scenario group. EXCOMM scenarios will each answer 4 questions on the guided reading worksheet. 1. How will the Soviets view your opinion 2. How will the rest of the world view your opinion 3. What is most at risk in this situation? 4. What values lie at the root of your opinion. JFK group will come up with 2 questions regarding each of the options. Questions should Be challenging and critical. Throughout this time, Co-teachers will interact and monitor with their own two separate groups. Mr. Walsh will work with the Diplomacy and Blockade Scenario groups Mr. Kwedar will work with the JFK and Invade Cuba Scenario groups. If group members are not engaged teachers will ask them basic questions that they will have to read to find the answer for. If group members are stumped, teachers will scaffold answers. Teachers will also make sure both of their groups stay on task.

Assessments/Checks for Understanding: -Each group member will be required to complete their aforementioned formative
Guided reading formative assessments. -Each group member will be expected to speak during Day 2 presentations.

Closure/Wrap-Up/Review:
-As an entire class Review details for tomorrow. Teachers will give students 10 minutes the following day to finalize presentations. Lastly Co-teachers will emphasize format for tomorrow. Teachers will give students 10 minutes the following day to finalize presentations. Each scenario Group will then have to present to the President group for roughly 5 minutes. The President group will ask follow up questions following each scenario presentation. Everyone will be expected to participate in tomorrows class debate. Co-Teachers will collect folders from their respective groups/ Positively reinforce class for hard work if applicable.
