[GARATE: SCHOLARSHIP REFLECTIONS]

In the 2012 academic year I set out to achieve 3 goals. Of this I met two and did not meet one. The first goal was to complete and submit the research brief on ASL/English Bilingual Education for VL2. I began writing the brief in 2011 and after two rounds of feedback from the editor I submitted its final version in May 2012. The brief was posted the publications and products page. While the initial goal of the research briefs are to provide resources for educators, the briefs will be part of a parent information kit that will be made available to parents of deaf children nationwide. My second goal was to begin data collection via the distribution of a survey on Teacher Beliefs about Deaf Bilingual Education and bilingual practices with AEBPD trained teachers. This is an ongoing goal, as I did not intend to be finished with the process this year. I had hoped to be further along in the fall but I did not receive IRB approval until March 2012. As stated in the research activity timeline I was able to pilot my survey, make changes to some items, design the online survey and test its distribution, identify 25 out of the 35 schools and gather initial contact information for their administrators. I also wrote a small research grant to hire a research assistant. I did not meet my goal to begin planning for a study on students perspective about the use of technology to implement a bilingual classroom environment at the university level. For this year I had planned to design the survey and to write and submit IRB application. My interest in this topic is stems from years of using various forms of media to provide students with a bilingual learning experience inside and outside of the classroom. In addition, my interest is to approach this study from the framework of the Scholarship to teaching and learning. However, the main obstacle to this activity was time, or I should say lack of time. This is the first year that I have supervised DE Student Teachers both semesters, and taught a summer class while taking one. After thinking about it, it was more important to me to focus on the study I have already started than to begin another one and have even less time for either. Because I am very much interested in the students perspective, I will continue to pursue this topic in the near future, perhaps once my current study is closer to its conclusion.
