Wireless IP Access System (WIPAS)

Introduction Recently, wireless services such as cellular phones and Wireless LANs have been proliferating rapidly, and due to the growing demand for broadband services, fixed wireless access (FWA) systems are being introduced. The Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS), which employs the 26 to 31-GHz frequency band and provides up to a 156-Mbit/s downlink, is representative of the FWA systems. On the other hand, FWA systems based on IEEE 802.11 [1] have been developed, and are being provided to home users. One such breakthrough technology is Wireless IP Access System (WIPAS).Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) developed the Wireless IP Access System (WIPAS), a point-to-multipoint fixed wireless ac-cess (FWA) system utilizing the 26-GHz frequency band for home and small office-home office (SOHO) users to provide broadband internet access service. WIPAS provides a broadband access service by combining wireless technology with optical fiber. We describe this structure as fiber + radio. WIPAS provides a best-effort-type IP service with the transmission rate of 80 Mbit/s. WIPAS is compatible with FTTH in terms of cost, transmission speed and user interface, and is a part of NTTs broadband access infrastructure. The access point (AP, hub station) was downsized so that it can be mounted on a telephone pole. The wireless terminal (WT, user equipment) was downsized to a volume of approximately two liters.
