The building is in the older area of Cairo and this is one of the few remaining buildings that have the best example of the ventilation, or climatologically advanced according to Hassan Fathy of the buildings back then. The building is mainly made of mud bricks and light woods, all locally resourced, and the construction time would not be too long. The main thought behind the building is all dependants on the orientation away from the North as thats where the strongest heat comes from by the sun. The way of which this ventilation system works is very simple. First and most important it needs a Malkaf/ windcatch facing north and high up above the building to catch the winds. This also has a lot of sunlight at the position thus the sharp L shape. From this it is fed into the main courtyard and through the mashrabia/ dividing walls to cool the bottom floor where the bedrooms are. A fountain can be placed in the courtyard as well to help keep this system cool and become more efficient. An example of the water fountain can be seen in the diagram. After the air is circulated and becomes warm and it rises going up to the shuksheki/ tower. Here this tower has windows shown in the picture and diagram where the air escapes' at the tower the wood is lightweight to increase the circulation. This also has the effect of creating a pressure difference, the low pressure inside to the high outside try to balance out thus making the cool air move inside and hot outside The two diagrams of the buildings section and floor plan clearly show the airflow through the house. This basic system has been used in many other hot arid houses seen in the other elevation shown. The construction and materials might be different but the principle remains the same. Comparisons can be made to the library as they have made balconies in essence do the same things of the ventilation system of the House. Also they both face south and catch the wind and it is then fed into the main reading areas/ most populated areas of the library to then be extracted away by the ac system.
