Marketers are good at looking ahead. We predict/create the future,
working to build an idea or a product into something that will matter
more tomorrow than it does today.
The focus on the future, though, encourages us to take our attention
away from what has worked in the past. The next time someone tells you
that they’ve seen a UFO, ask them about this article. A look at a hundred
years of UFOs and bigfoots and other things that were certain to change
everything shows that they never have. Don’t even get me started with
the history of astrology.
My question to marketers with a huge idea, something that will change
everything, is, “tell me about how someone has done this before.” Of
course there are first-time-ever groundbreaking exceptions that change
the rules forever. But my guess is that you’d rather have a launch or a
concept that can follow in the conceptual footsteps of what came before.
The theory is that almost anyone who knows how to use a computer can
install and run a server application in the Amazon cloud. We’ll find out, I
hope. And if it turns out to be easy enough we may be able to boot up a
community of applications.
I have one final problem to deal with, and I thought perhaps readers of
this blog might be able to help.
I’m bundling a Windows 2003 server with Apache/Win and the OPML
Editor. I’ve got the AMI all bundled up, but there’s a problem with the
password. Not sure what I’m supposed to do, but when I try to do the Get
Administrator Password command from the popup in the AWS
dashboard, it comes back saying that it can’t get the password because
the old admin password is baked into the instance. Pretty confusing.
Trying to find some instructions that explain how you’re supposed to
clean up so the password can be set by the EC2 system, but not finding it.
If anyone has a clue, please post a comment here.

Hitting the slopes

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with skiing as I get older. I love
being out in the fresh air and the vibe of the mountain. I board more
than I ski because it is easier. I changed from skiing to boarding to do it
with the kids but they have reached an entirely different level at this
point where I am not going.
Fred asked me today if the kids weren’t around would I still want to ski?
On a day like today, the answer is emphatically yes. The sky is blue, the
weather is warm, the conditions are pure spring. These kids were skiing
without shirts. Insane but it is that warm.
Tomorrow, Fred and I are going out solo. I am going to put on skis and
we are going to pretend that we are young again and hit up the moguls
which is what we always loved. My guess is we won’t be going full tilt all
day but it will be interesting to see if we love it or decide that if it weren’t
for the kids, we really wouldn’t be doing this anymore. I sincerely do not
believe it will be the latter.

Emily turns 16

It was Emily’s birthday on Sunday night. 16. It was just the family.
Watching our kids grow is such a joy.
There is something strange as I see my role change, more than Fred’s.
Men, most men, start at point A and make a steep incline in their work
world over time. For me, my work line has been nothing less than
erratic. I have written about this before. It is really hard to describe
watching the kids get older and becoming incredibly independent -
which is what we taught them to be - which pushes me to move into a
different role. It is all good but I do think about what keeps me busy and
engaged next time. Someone said to me recently, I believe you have
another big one in you. Perhaps. On one hand, I hope so, but on the
other hand, how does that big one effect a life where everyone has flown
from the nest. I believe this is an issue that many women think about
who have chosen to stay home or make their work life less of a main
focus.
More than likely I will just plunge in feet first as that seems to be
something I have done my entire life.

pic Last night I went to a panel discussion at the UC-Berkeley school of

MAR 17, 2009 06:23P.M. journalism. The topic was the San Francisco Chronicle, the last major
paper in the Bay Area, and one that seems to be headed for the same fate
pic as the Rocky Mountain News and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

I took a picture and a very brief video, to give you a sense of the venue. It
MARSHAL SANDLER .COM was a packed room, in the library at the J-school. The first part of the
discussion, about an hour, was pretty reasonable, user-focused, not
reading re AIG Et al making excuses for the paper. Bergman even said the Chron hadn’t lived
up to the potential of the Bay Area, I thought that was a very good way to

hour, the discussion shifted, got more relaxed and the selfishness came

The moderator, Susan Rasky, asked the panelists, if they were god what
MARSHAL SANDLER .COM would they do. Hire lots of reporters, one panelist said. Get the new
President to pay our salaries, said another. Tax these things, Rasky said,

things aren’t so bad and the Chronicle will continue to print for the
apple-AID-Greed-Wall Street indefinite future. Others said Bill Gates should pay, or Google.

I got the floor very briefly, at the end, after Scott Rosenberg tried to
explain that journalism could happen without newspapers (I imagine
he’ll post on this). I said the sources would take over the news. Not
enough reporters covering the courtroom? The judge will report, as will
the jurors, the attorneys, the plaintiff, the defendent. It will be messier, I
would have said had I had the time to complete the thought, but more
truth will come out.
I said that fifteen years ago I was unhappy with the way journalism was
practiced in the tech industry, so I took matters into my own hands. And
then dozens of people did, and then hundreds followed, and now we get
much better information about tech. It will happen everywhere, in
politics, education, the military, health, science, you name it. The sources
will fill in where we used to need journalists.
A government endowment for the incumbent journalists now would be,
imho, as unthinkable as a state religion. It would be wrong, and
unconstitutional, read the First Amendment. We the people would
challenge it in court, and if they hadn’t lost their minds, it would be
rejected. We’re just beginning to get the attention of the gatekeepers. Of
course you want to go back to the other side of the gate where you don’t
have to listen to us. We don’t want you to have that luxury.
Such a session wouldn’t be complete without a blanket condemnation of
the web, and we sure got one. I would have loved to have shown them
Simon Johnson’s blog, former chief economist at the IMF, who, in
September explained the calamity in clear layman’s terms, critical ideas
and info you never heard in the Times, Chronicle, WSJ, or any of the
television networks, not even on NPR (until Fresh Air had him as a guest
in February). Nouriel Roubini called the crash years before anyone else,
on the web of course. People with credentials like theirs who went direct.
I was able to find them, a mere blogger, why couldn’t the investigative
reporters? I would also show them Paul Krugman’s blog, someone who is
regularly quoted by journalists, but for some reason feels the need to put
his ideas on the web without a filter. And Doc Searls, Jay Rosen, and any
of dozens of other people I read regularly to inform me with ideas that
you will never find anywhere but the Internet.
I would also like to say to the assembled educators — you owe it to the
next generations, who you serve, to prepare them for the world they will
live in as adults, not the world you grew up in. Teach all of them the
basics of journalism, no matter what they came to Cal to study. Everyone
is now a journalist. You’ll see an explosion in your craft, but it will cease
to be a profession.
Oh if only I had been given a chance to speak, passionately and carefully,
I would have reminded them of the great Bay Area philosopher, Scoop
Nisker who wrote the epitaph for the current world of journalism and the
anthem for the new — in a simple sentence of 14 words:
If you don’t like the news, go out and make some of your own.

Update: I was bothered by Clay Shirky’s piece about the death of

newspapers that got so much play over the last few days, and finally
figured out why as I wrote this piece. He says that journalism is being
replaced by nothing. This is why the press likes his piece so much, it’s
been their main theme: You’ll miss us when we’re gone. The problem
with this thesis is that while the press as been declining a new
decentralized press has been booting up. I talk about this toward the end
of today’s piece. The sources who no longer trust the journos, or aren’t
being called by them when they have something to say, are going direct.
This is what replaces journalism. It’s happening everywhere (Shirky’s
piece is a great example of it). Sometimes the thing that’s hardest to see
is what’s right in front of you.

Reading about AIG in the paper today made my stomach turn. Then
again, reading about Goldman Sachs added to the nausea. Reading
about the stimulus money starting to create roads in San Bernadino
made me happy.
Granted, Goldman Sachs, is a private company, at least it was. Now you
and me (American taxpayers) own a piece. Private individuals kept
pouring their money into Goldman Sachs for the slew of returns they
received over the years. Billions of dollars were flowing through the
coffers. Lloyd Blankfein awarded himself $70 million dollars in bonus
money in 2007. He also gave out $20 million dollar bonuses to the his
top soldiers. Why the private investors in Goldman Sachs were not
outraged that those type of bonuses were being distributed instead of
putting the money back into the company to insure a solvent
organization is beyond me. I guess everyone was living so high on the
hog that people either thought that is was okay for the masters of the
universe to take a huge piece of the transaction made with their money
or they thought privately, I wish I was an investment banker. Now, we
are seeing greed coming to a head.
AIG, another disgusting organization. Giving out over $160 million
dollars of bonuses last week to the group that was involved with the
downfall of the organization. Doesn’t even matter if they were giving

bonuses to the people who had a profitable division, it is about the whole MARSHAL SANDLER .COM
company. I guess that the thought going through the people who cashed
their bonus check last week is that it was like taking the last bite of the Amplify’d:

About a month ago, we took all of our money ( actually it was only MAR 17, 2009 03:23P.M.

I would think, call me crazy, that the masters of the universe, once
revered in their communities will now be looked at with disdain. When
the people who cashed their bonuses at AIG or the people at Goldman
who blew through their millions of dollars in cash, go to school events
with their kids or community events, I’d find it hard to believe that there
isn’t a tax payer in the group who isn’t taking off their rose colored
glasses and seeing exactly what these people are. People who not only
consider themselves entitled but people of pure greed. They haven’t
created anything except a big fat bank account for themself and a mess
for the American economy.

outlets and their Local Station-NBC is as dead as Custer-

I was reading my partner Albert’s post on cloud services yesterday.

Albert explains that he’d like to see all startups building on top of the
cloud.

All of this is great news for startups because it is further driving down
the cost of hosting. At this point I am encouraging everyone who is
starting up to write for the cloud from day one. In fact, I think it is time
to be somewhat suspect of a technical team that is not doing that.

But what really got my attention was a comment to Albert’s post:

I think Amazon is so amazing that there is no point in

bothering with the other guys unless the application actually
needs geographic redundancy. I would say that’s when an
hour of downtime directly costs more than $5k (i.e. >$20MM
annual revenue through the site). Aside from Google itself, I
can’t think of a situation where geographic redundancy didn’t
introduce application-level downtime in exchange for the
datacenter-level uptime.

Is it possible that AMZN will come to dominate cloud services in the

same way that Google has come to dominate search (or Amazon has
come to dominate online retailing)?

Not only are cloud services commoditizing the dedicated hosting

industry, but its not even clear yet that other cloud services are making
much headway in competing against AWS (Amazon Web Services). I
know that all of you are much smarter about this stuff than me, so I’d be
interested in hearing your thoughts in the comments.

Disclosure: I am long Amazon and thinking about getting longer.
