Though the rules and regulations vary according to the state or local area, the premise of the competition is the same as youngsters are pitted against one another with the aim of becoming champion and perhaps going on to represent their state in the National Spelling Bees Competition.

MASTER SPELLER The master speller is the person on stage that reads the words to the spellers from the specified words list that is to be used in the competition. The list consists of words founding books approved by English Panel, such as Longman Dictionary. The master speller appointed is Pn Nelly Ajim.

JUDGES The judges have ultimate control of the competition. They can correct errors as soon as they see them if they believe the rules have been breached, or that the master speller has made errors in his pronunciation or definition of a word. Appeals can be made from the spellers as well as their parents or teachers, but they must be done so immediately. Appeals are handled at the end of each round and the judges' decision is final. The judges appointed are Pn Salimang Abdullah, Pn. Nurinis @ Siti Asmah Booman, Pn. Kesumah @ Wati bt Subindin.

TIME KEEPER Only one time keeper is appointed. The time keeper needs to ring the bell twice after 90 seconds as soon as the master speller pronounces a particular word. The time keeper appointed is Pn. Ruby Ronarita binti Abd Rajak .

MASTER OF CEREMONY (M.C) The master of ceremony will conduct the event such as calling the speller and welcoming all the participants and members of the floor. The M.C will begin the event and end the event. The M.C appointed is Pn. Dayang Saadiah bt Haji Ahmad.

PARTICIPANTS All pupils from SK. Pekan 1 Pitas are allowed to take part. They will be selected by their English teacher. Each class can send 4 5 participants and they need to wear school uniform during the competition.

PRIZES The champion, the first runner-up and the second runner-up will get medals, stationeries and certificates. Consolation prizes will be given to participants who get in the 4th place and 5th place.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Introduction1.1 The competition will be an oral spelling competition.1.2 The competition will held in Computer Lab of SK. Pekan Pitas , at 8.30 a.m. , on the 13th April 2012 (Friday). 2. Rules of the COMPETITION. a. All the spellers will be given a number to determine their spelling turns. The numbers will be randomly drawn from a box/container b. All the spellers will be seated in numerical order on a stage, facing the audience, master speller, timekeeper and judges. c. The official/teacher-in-charge will prepare the words, definition of the words and sample sentences. d. Each speller beginning with speller number one will called to the front and the master speller will read out the words to be spelt.3. Each speller is given 60 seconds to spell the words once the master speller has pronounced the word. A bell will be rung twice after 60 seconds

Spellers are strongly encourage saying the words, spelling it and then repeat it when they have finished spelling it. However the judges will not disqualify any speller for failing to pronounce the word either before or after spelling it.

By saying the word aloud before spelling it, the speller has a chance to confirm what they have heard.

If the speller says the words differently from what the master speller has pronounced, the master speller will clarify the word by repeating the word to the speller.

6.

If the speller fails to complete the spelling within the 60 seconds time frame, the speller will be disqualified / dropped from the competition.

7.

The spellers are only allowed once to ask for the word to be repeated during the 60 seconds time frame.

8.

Once a speller begins spelling a word, he or she may pause and start all over from the beginning within the time frame.

9.

All the words spelled during the competition must follow the British standard of English. Other types of spelling like the American variation will not be accepted.

The judges will be in control of the competition. Their decision will be final on all questions and no objections will be entertained. a. After spelling the word, if the spelling is correct, the judge will announce CORRECT. If the speller is incorrect the judge will press the buzzer and announce INCORRECT b. If the spelling is correct, the speller will return to his/her seat. c. If the spelling is incorrect, the speller will be dropped from the competition. The master speller will give the correct spelling of the word and the speller will have to leave the stage. d. The next speller is then called to the stage and given his/her word to spell. e. Once all the spellers have had their turns, the round is over and the next round begins with the remaining spellers. f. This continues until only five spellers remain. g. The last five spellers to remain will be declared the winners and will qualify to participate at district level.

The official source to determine the proper spelling in spelling bee is LONGMAN dictionary of contemporary English. All words that are used in a spelling bee can be found in this edition of the Longmans dictionary

The Spelling Bee competition had been conducted successfully with 73 participations from the pupils of both level 1 and level 2. The participation from the pupils can be said as very encouraging and successfully executed. Since the participation was too many and feared of lack of time to do the activity, it was then decided that level 1 pupils will be having a spelling competition instead of spelling bee competition. Therefore, only last 20 pupils will be recorded. As opposed to the proposal paper drafted earlier, this report was made based on two activities which are the spelling competition for level 1 pupils and Spelling bee competition for the level 2 pupils. The venues are then decided that for Spelling bee competition in the schools hall while the spelling competition will be conducted in the classroom. This automatically became compulsory for the level 1 pupils since all of them need to sit in their classrooms. In order to accommodate the changes in plan at the last few days minutes, as decided by the organizing board members, judges for the spelling competition are the English teacher teaching that particular class. REFLECTION In order to complete the task given as accordance to the assignment requirement, my friends and I meet up together and discussed on the matter. At the same time, task delegations were conducted so as to eliminate free rider. Each group member were strictly reminded to do their part as soon as possible in order to make sure that the compiling process can be done not at the last minute which will surely resulted in stress. To do this task is too hard for me since Im not computer savvy and furthermore, my English is not that very well. Other than that, the distance between one of the group member became a great barrier for me to complete this assignment. In order to come up with the full proposal paper for these activities, my friends and I had to went to the one of the Pegawai Bahasa in Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah for help. Thankfully, Puan Farhanna Aidid have a list of proposal papers regarding activities which are often organize by them at the district level. All we have to do was to translate it into English Language. Here, Ive learned how to use the dictionary and to choose the best words to form a correct and proper English. Ive learned that, we cannot directly translate a bahasa Malaysia words into English literally. We need to see the meaning of the words contextually. The competitions had been done successfully with a lot of participations from the pupils. In retrospect, I would do several things differently. I should have reminded all respective English language teacher to compel each class should send at least two representatives from each years and each classes. Based on the performances shown by the pupils, it can be seen that the pupils need to sharpen their spelling skill. This will help them in their writing.

FUTURE ACTION PLAN In the future, hopefully this kind of competition will get more favorable response conforming to more participation. It is hoped that students who participate in this competition on a more sustainable prepare participants for a victory not only proved the greatness but could indirectly increase the confidence of the students to communicate more effectively sake of the crowd and can also enhance self-image among students.

REFLECTION 2 Since we are from the same school, I regarded that I dont have to write the report myself. We had decided to do it together. Instead of using the schools hall, we ended using the library after we reduced the numbers of participants, with no podium, just cringe-inducing feedback on the P.A. system. And for the record, the spelling was a-t-r-o-c-i-o-u-s. Just three of the first 10 contestants spelled their words correctly. At one point, a poor kid paced in circles and clutched his crotch before misspelling beleaguered and sprinting off to the restroom. The winner, Jessie Ann Sabrin, is a spelling superstar complete with signature move: She air-writes each word across her palm before speaking it. her innovative, everenthusiastic coach-were at the small-time competition to pay homage. These minor-league competitions help kids as young as 6 years old work out the spelling kinks at an early age. Spelling bees are fascinating and puzzling. The former because it is a pleasure to see young children being successfully tutored to a point that they are able to spell the most esoteric words which most people have never heard before and certainly few would use in either oral or written communication. It is the limited value in learning these rarely used words that makes the whole competition puzzling these kids, their parents and tutors must spend endless hours and perhaps money trying to master these words. It reminds me of the old joke by Billy Connolly: I dont know why I should have to learn Algebra Im never like ly to go there. But Algebra will be more likely to be useful than most of these rarely used words. But, nonetheless, spelling bees are fun and one cannot but help admire the dedication of these kids in getting to a point where they compete in a national competition like the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Spelling bees are thought to have originated in the US though today these competions are held in various countries including the UK, Australia, Mexico, India, Canada and other countries. Although these spelling bees are pretty serious events with a lot of tension especially for the contestants they occasionally result in some quite humorous and unusual situations. I have learned a lot out of this competition. I would like to thanks all my fellow teachers and my group member in helping me to make things real.

REFLECTION I have joined my friend at SK Pekan in conducting this activity since the pupils at my school is very few and I can foresee that such activity will not have participation from them. However from this experience I can get a lot of input and in the future I can conduct this kind of activity in my own school. After starting learning English seriously this year, the same kind of conversations has taken place again and again. My progress early this year is quite amazing, but the way I deal with multiple languages fascinates me even more. My first language is Bahasa Malaysia, and I started learning English since primary school. With different extents of exposure to different languages learned through different methods, I find how the brain handles the task of learning languages, especially second languages, a topic worth exploring. At present, I still cant fully understand how the language learning process works in my brain, and why my ability of learning the first languages and the seconds are different. Linguists have posed various theories to explain their observations from related studies. Among them, Chomskys theory has gained much attention. He argues that our ability to learn a language is innate, and there is a universal grammar at the base of the structure of all existing languages, which enables infants to learn whichever language they are immersed in (1). From my personal experience and my observations of people around me, the result of the Natural Approach is very rewarding. It is, in fact, much more effective than the traditional, grammar focused approach of teaching. In the city Im from, all primary school students are required to learn English from their primary school. My first year of English learning was a disaster. Although we didn t really learn grammar, we didnt speak or listen either. I remember looking at the textbook full of exotic combinations of letters, and write them down, five times for each word (as homework). I had no idea about what I was learning. The sentences made no sense to me at all. Sometimes I do wish I could have a chance to be surrounded by native speakers so I could be better at English, but I still feel lucky not to have to learn English like most Sungai students do. It might sound unbelievable, but most native in Malaysia student cant even speak like an American first grader after graduating from college. Ive been through all of the English classes and tests in Malaysia, and the only thing I learned from those is forget about

grammar, follow your instinct. My friend always said, You need think in that language to actually learn it well., and that it exactly what I find myself doing when using English.

My history of learning English began when I entered junior high school. For the next three years, I mostly studied reading and grammar in junior high school and never studied English outside school. I was little anxious about such English learning and my future studies, but I wasted enormous time in the futile study of English. When I went to high school, I had no chance to change my idea about learning English, so I studied English because my teacher told me to do so. In the third year at high school, however, I started thinking about my future and studying English in earnest for university entrance exams. According to the trend in the tests I wanted to take, I mainly studied grammar and usage. Of course, I studied reading paragraphs logically. So, I mostly read logical articles, but rarely novels.
