Cross Curricular Connections: N/A Instructional Objective Criteria: Antecedent: When being read a story Behavior: Students will be able to identify the main character and main problems to summarize Content: in a narrative text (Stand Straight Ella Kate) Degree: with 95% accuracy CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.2 Assessment of the Objectives: As a class, we will answer 4 components of his or her summarizing sheet: somebody wanted, but, so, then. When we finish, they will have to write a 2-3 summary using the information on their own. I will take this up to assess. Materials/Resources: notebook, pencil, and a copy of Stand Straight Ella Kate by Kate Klise and M. Sarah Klise Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Social: students must be capable of participating in class discussion. Cognitive: students need to be able to listen to a story and identify characters, setting, and time. Physical: students must be capable of sitting through a story. Emotional: students must be able to disagree and agree with others. Procedures: Introduce text: Today I will be reading you a story called Stand Straight Ella Kate by Kate Klise and M. Sarah Klise Engage the learner: This is a true story about a girl who had a condition called gigantism. She was born normal size, but she grew much faster than everyone else and ended up being 8ft 4in tall and wearing a size 24 shoe. Although she disliked being tall at first, she ended up making the best of it and found out that maybe being different wasnt so bad after all.

Label the learning/state the objective: As I read this story, I want you to pay close attention to what is taking place because afterwards, we are going to summarize the story. To be a good reader, you have to be able to read and understand the words. Not just know how to say the words, but understand the message that the author is trying to say. Model desired behavior: I am passing out a sheet to you that we are going to use after I read. But first, I want to look over it with you so we know what to look for. The first thing is somebody wanted. The somebody is the main character and what they wanted is exactly that. What did they want or need or desire in the story? The but is what prevented then from getting what they wanted or needed. The so is what they did about it. Since they didnt get what they wanted, what happened? The then is how did the story conclude? What ended up happening to the main character or what did they do? Read the text: Apply the learning: -Somebody wanted: Who is the main character? What is the main problem in the story? (Ella Kate wanted to be normal. She wanted to be the same height as everyone her age.) -But: What is keeping the character from getting what they want? (She has a condition called gigantism. She keeps on growing.) -So: What does the character do about what she wants? (She went to work for a museum, then a circus. She traveled the world. She made a lot of money. She found out that being tall wasnt a bad thing.) -Then: What happens at the end of the story? Does the main character get what they want or solve their problem? (She used to money to pay off her parents debt. She built a custom built house for herself that was plenty tall enough. Her friends came over to visit and she got to share stories of her travels and all shed seen. She realized she missed traveling and that the world had so much to see and was plenty big enough, much larger than her. Independent: At the end of your sheet you are asked to write a 2-3 sentence summary of the story based on the information you wrote down. You are to do this by yourself and not with a partner. Assess: While students are giving responses out loud, I will use a checklist system to see who knows and who doesnt. I will also take up their handout to check their written answers. Accommodations: Students who are ESL may look at a copy of the book before class. Visual and hearing-impaired students need to sit in the front of the class.
