What is a verb?
A verb is a word used to express an action, a condition, or a state of being.

What is an action verb?


An action verb tells what its subject does. The action it expresses maybe either physical or mental. Example: The dog walks down the hill. The students are talking. (physical action) Hes in love with her. She hates him. (mental action)

What is a linking verb?


A linking verb links its subject to a word in the predicate. The most common linking verbs are forms of the verb be. Example: The Oz is a movie. Her name sounds dangerous. The dogs are barking angrily at the cat.

What are helping verbs and verb phrases?


Helping Verbs help mean verbs express precise shades of meaning. The combination of one or more helping verbs with a main verb is called a verb phrase. Example: They will go next week. I am eating a cake. I must talk to Rohan.

is, am, are, was, were be, being, been has, have, had do, does, did will, shall, should, would can, could may, might, must

Action Verbs and Objects


Action verbs are often accompanied by words that complete their meaning. These complements are direct objects and indirect objects. A direct object is a noun or pronoun that names the receiver of a verbs action. subject + verb + what? or who? = direct object Example: Everybody loved the teacher. An indirect object tells to what or whom or for what or whom an action is done. Example: He gave his dog a bone.

Transitive and Intransitive Verbs


An action verb that has a direct object is called a transitive verb. An action verb that has no direct object is called an intransitive verb. Example: Sanya fell off the swing.(Transitive) Sanya fell suddenly. (Intransitive) Rohan tripped on the road.(Transitive) Rohan tripped quietly.(Intransitive)

Linking Verbs and Predicate Words


The word that a linking verb connects its subject to is called a subject complement. Example:

Glaciers are beautiful and potentially dangerous at the same time.

A subject complement can be a predicate noun or a predicate adjective. A predicate noun is a noun that follows a linking verb and identifies, renames, or defines the subject. Example: Odie was the dogs name. A predicate adjective is an adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies the subject. Example: Parrots are noisy.

Intransitive Verbs
Huffing and puffing, we arrived at the classroom door with only seven seconds to spare.

Linking Verbs
The cookies smell divine.

Ans. Smell

Predicate Words
The Johnsons have returned.

Ans. Have returned.
