Unit Title: Robert Munsch Author Study Name: Jacqueline Lahaise

Number of Lessons: 12 Subject(s): Language Arts

Time: (in weeks) Grade(s):

4 3

Rationale & Overview: Author studies are a powerful way to help students build reading comprehension and further develop their reading skills. This specific author study will teach students about the literary elements of Character, Setting, and Plot (conflict and solution). Robert Munsch was chosen because his stories readily lend themselves to interpretation and exploration. Furthermore Munschs books are exciting and fun for children to read, which will hopefully spark their interest and inspire students to read more. Students will be given the opportunity to select their own books to read and record their selections on an Author Study Booklet. The teacher will model each component of the Author Study with an example text using a gradual release model to ensure students are set up for success. Students will complete a Self Assessment to monitor their progress during Silent Reading and Work blocks. Prescribed Learning Outcomes from IRPs: Language Arts: B1 read fluently and demonstrate comprehension of a range of grade-appropriate literary texts, such as picture books. B11 recognize and derive meaning from the structures and features of texts, including: literary elements (e.g., plot, conflict, character, setting) C7 use writing and representing to express personal responses and opinions about experiences and texts C10 use the features and conventions of language to express meaning in their writing and representing including: new words from their oral language and reading experiences Prerequisite Concepts and Skills: The students will be guided and gradually set free from whole class modeling to individual assignments. Therefore, no prerequisite concepts and skills are required. However, students should have a basic beginner level of text features, and be able to read independently for 20 minutes. Students will be provided with audio books should the reading level be beyond their assessed level. Cross-Curricular Connections: This unit focuses primarily upon English Language Arts PLOs however, connections are made to Fine Arts, with the various artistic representations of the story. If time permits, students will also participate in Readers Theatre activities. Extensions to Unit: After this unit is completed, students could do further research on Robert Munsch, and write their own story in his writing style. Students could make a puppet show of their favourite book. Students could also create a diorama of a scene from their favourite story.
