Kernels sweep doubleheader from Clinton


Cedar Rapids wins by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 in doubleheader at Clinton. The two teams play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
CLINTON, IOWA The Kernels swept the Clinton LumberKings at Ashford University Field on Saturday. The Kernels won game one 4-3 and edged Clinton 2-1 in the nightcap. The Kernels took advantage of 10 base on balls and scored all of their runs in the 4th inning in a 4-3 win over Clinton in game one. Cedar Rapids sent 10 hitters to the plate in the 4th inning and drew five walks. J.D. Williams and Romy Jimenez both drew bases loaded walks. Byron Buxton beat out an infield single to score a run, and Tyler Grimes scored on a wild pitch in the inning. Clintons Patrick Kivlehan nailed a 2-run home run for the LumberKings. The other run came on a RBI sacrifice fly by Tim Lopes. Hudson Boyd (1-0) went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6 and walking 1. Brett Lee pitched one inning, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits. Chris Mazza notched his 2nd save with a scoreless and hitless 7th inning of work. Matt Anderson (0-1) took the loss for Clinton in 3.2 innings. In game two, all runs were scored in the 1st innings The Kernels took a 2-0 lead on back to back RBI hits in the 1st inning. Jorge Polancos RBI single up the middle plated Byron Buxton. Dalton Hicks followed with a RBI double down the right field line that scored Candido Pimentel. Clintons Jabari Henryled off the bottom of the 1st inning with a solo home run to trim the Kernels lead to 2-1. Mason Melotakis (1-0) started and went 5 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits. He struck out 7, walked 1, and at one point retired 13 batters in a row. Steve Gruver pitched the final 2 innings, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit for the save. He struck out 4 and walked 0. Tyler Pike (0-2) took the loss for the LumberKings, going 4 innings and allowing 2 runs.
