nd

Intended of Duration Lesson: ~1 hour State of Michigan Standards/Benchmarks: CSS.Math.Content.2.MD.D.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph. Lesson Goal: Students will discuss and learn about what a graph is and the various purposes of graphs. Students will learn about the different parts of a graph. Students will become familiar with tally marks. Lesson Objectives: Given a blank graph and objects of different categories, students will graph the given data using crayons and then make a tally chart with 100% accuracy. * *(This task will be done as a class and the answers will be discussed as the graph is filled out. The main purpose of this task is to become familiar with graphs, so participation and effort is what the teacher is looking for from the students at this time.) Materials: PowerPoint and Promethean Board SmartTart Candies Blank Graphs worksheets Crayons Extra Practice worksheets and graphs Elmo Prior Knowledge: Students will need to have some familiarity of what tallies are and what graphs are, but neither are necessary for this lesson since this lesson will be introducing the main concepts. Procedure: Students will be seated at desks and the teacher will begin the PowerPoint The teacher will first ask students if they know what a graph is o Have they ever seen one before? Where? Based on student responses, what is the purpose of a graph? o What is the purpose? Teacher will introduce the main parts of a graph o Title and categories Teacher will work with students (Using Promethean flip chart), to make a graph for hot/cold lunch. o Students will be able to participate in making the graph o If students have trouble, another chart can be made together Teacher will then introduce the concept of tallies o Teacher will introduce how tallies are used to represent numbers

o Class will make a tally chart to represent the original hot/cold lunch graph Teacher will then introduce the activity that uses SmartTarts and graphs o Students will be asked to first fill in the different parts of a graph with topic appropriate answers Title, categories o Students will then place the candies where they belong on the graph o Students will then replace the candies by coloring the appropriate sections o Students will then write the appropriate number using tallies Once students have completed their graphs, the teacher will introduce the concept of more than using the Elmo o Student will fill in the question at the bottom of the worksheet If time, worksheets from the workbook will be done to give the students more practice.

Assessment: Informal Observational Informal Curriculum-based Objective Completion Expansion: If students are struggling with the concepts of this lesson, the teacher will work with the class on making another graph together and go into more detail explaining the concepts of a graph. If students understand the material and accomplish the work quicker than expected, the students will be given alternative works to do that deal with graphs, tallies, and more than.
