Shapes and Area Unit - 8th Grade Mathematics Reflective Symmetry Standards

CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.1 Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations: CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.1a Lines are taken to lines, and line segments to line segments of the same length. CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.1b Angles are taken to angles of the same measure. CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.1c Parallel lines are taken to parallel lines. CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.3 Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.

Behavioral/Objective Students will be able to explain the effect a reflection has on a shape. They will also be able to determine how many lines of reflective symmetry a given shape has. Objective/Purpose Last week we started looking at transformations on shapes like dilations. Today we are going to spend our time looking at a different type of transformation, reflections. We are also going to talk about symmetry. Anticipatory Set Think-Pair-Share Can anyone tell me what a reflection is? When do you see reflections? What are some characteristics of reflections? What is a line of symmetry and when did we talk about it before? What did line of symmetry mean when we talked about it before? Input Task Analysis - Homework review - State Purpose - Anticipatory Set - Students will practice reflecting a shape over a line of reflection using the red mirrors. - What are some shapes or things you think are symmetrical? Are peoples faces symmetrical? (Show a print out using the DocCam) - Students will practice identifying the number of lines of reflectional symmetry a shape has. Manipulatives will be provided so that students can actually fold the shapes in half and then count the resulting creases. - Discuss Findings

- Closure - Assign homework Thinking Levels By the end of this lesson, students will reach the application level. Method and Materials Manipulatives - various shapes the students can fold to actually see the symmetry Closure Exit Slip - Describe how reflections change a shape. Independent Practice Homework: Practice Problems - Complete the handout.

Reflections & Reflectional Symmetry Identify the line(s) of symmetry in each shape or draw the appropriate reflection.
