Big Idea Students learn best when they are actively engaged and as creative participants in their own learning experiences. Make a Connection I have observed teachers using things such as real world experiences, artifacts, and cooperative learning in their classrooms and it really makes an impact on the way that students develop their own ideas and perceptions about the world around them. Learning should be hands-on, intriguing, and interactive in order to build more meaningful connections for students. Active learners are engaged in activities such as exploring, analyzing, examining, communicating, creating, reflecting, and using prior and new experiences. I know that when I am given the opportunity to participate actively and explore, rather than being a passive listener or reader, I tend to retain more of the information and understand the material better. I also believe students, as a student myself, are more likely to be directly engaged and attentive when they have a say and/or choices in what kinds of things they will be studying and assessed by.
