    Paint is composed of pigment, binder, and solvent. Pigment provides color, binder holds the pigment together and adheres it to a surface, and solvent is used to thin or thicken the paint. There are various types of paints including tempera, oil, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, encaustic, and casein that differ in their composition, properties like transparency versus opacity, and drying time. Paint can be applied using brushes, knives, fingers or sticks and was historically applied as fresco directly onto walls and ceilings but the invention of paint tubes in the late 19th century allowed artists to work outside of the studio.
