The syllabus for the Course on International Financial Management is as follows.

Portion to be covered in the First Mid-Semester Examination on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, is highlighted and underlined. Title of the course Course Objectives International Financial Management To familiarize students with financial management in a global context, and the mechanism for facilitating global transactions, particularly the International Monetary System, covering the institutions, procedures and conventions involved therein. Course Outline Origin of the need of foreign exchange transactions. Structure of the foreign exchange market. Participants in the market and their respective roles. Exchange rate quotes, spot and forward rates. Factors influencing exchange rates. The Law of One Price. Exchange rate regimes - fixed, floating and managed. Exchange rate determination in forward markets. The Balance of Payments and its components. Relationship between exchange rates and Balance of Payments. Interventions by central banks- Open Market Operations (OMO), Foreign Exchange Operations (FXO), and Sterilized Foreign Exchange Operations (SFXO). Types of foreign exchange exposure- Transaction Exposure, Real Operating Exposure, Translation Exposure. Approaches towards the management of foreign exchange exposure Money Market Hedges, Forward Market Hedges, Forex Futures and Options. Raising long-term capital from international capital markets- Global Depository Receipts, American Depository Receipts, Foreign Currency Bonds. Costs and Risks of Long Term Foreign Borrowing. International Monetary System, from Bretton-Woods to the present scenario. Institutions servicing the Monetary System- World Bank and IMF, and their respective roles. European Union.
