Solar System PowerPoint Planetary Size Worksheet

Introduction Students will be using this activity as an introduction to their science unit Exploring Space. Learning Activities Learning Activities Introduce to students that they will be learning about space exploration in their next sixth period unit of science. The first activity will require students to identify space related objects from a PowerPoint Slide. This PowerPoint is a quiz to see how many objects students can identify. Students will write their answers down on a lined piece of paper. Once the students have completed Differentiation

Note: Discuss with students that the iPad must remain on top of their desks at all times. This means they need to keep it visible at all times.

the PowerPoint quiz, they will be moving on to the next activity. 6. Students today will be completing a web scavenger hunt on an iPad and using a worksheet to explore information about space and the universe. 7. Students will each need an iPad. Hand out iPad to students based on their number orders. 8. Hand out scavenger hunt worksheets to students. Preview the instructions with the students. 9. Use a smart board to guide students to the website www.seasky.org 10. Inform students they will be completing an independent scavenger hunt. There are four sections they need to complete. Each section has specific instructions. They will have to do a bit of navigating to find their answers. 11. When then are finished with the scavenger hunt, they are to turn in the worksheet to the teacher and proceed to get an exit ticket. 12. The exit ticket will require them to find a website on the iPad using the internet to complete a planetary size and distance comparison. This will introduce students to the size of each planet of the solar system by looking at diameter and distance from the sun. 13. Students will be using the metric system to complete this activity. 14. Students will use the Science Netlinks Planet Size Comparison interactive. This interactive allows students to compare any planet to the sun or moon, or any other plant in the solar system. 15. The website for this activity is http://sciencenetlinks.com/interacti ves/messenger/psc/PlanetSize.html 16. Once students have completed this activity, they may peruse the NASA website for more space information. They will be required to take 15 notes about the information they find at the following url http://eyes.nasa.gov/index.html 17. Students will need to click on the explore the solar system button. 18. Students will take a short quiz on

Note: Students will be shown on the smart board, the website and how to navigate before they start the scavenger hunt.

Note: Students will be using a graphic organizer for their information. Read the organizer with students. Discussing an example by going to the interactive and comparing the Earth and the sun.

the information they found in their scavenger hunt. Differentiation for special learners: Students are provided graphic organizers. Students will be provided with a tutorial on how to navigate the websites to find information on their scavenger hunt. Students who finish early will be directed to another website for space exploration. Students who need more time will be required to work on this at home with a parent or family member.
