Uses of Internet

Acceptable Student Use


Conducting research, Analyzing data and information, Communicating with others using e-mail, word processing, web pages and/or presentation software, and/or Any other use deemed appropriate by the district for instructional benefit.

Unacceptable Use
Intentionally harming or tampering with hardware, data, and/or other users access to the network Downloading, playing, or copying music or printing song lyrics not directly related to instruction Playing games not directly related to classroom instruction Sending, receiving, or displaying obscene or offensive language, images, or descriptions Harassing, insulting, or threatening others Violating copyright laws or plagiarizing materials Installing unauthorized software Downloading, copying, or printing material without authorization Using the network or hardware for commercial or illegal purposes Wasting school district resources

Users have the right to free speech and privacy to a certain extent, however, the Director of Information Technology or his/her designee may access user accounts in order to perform routine maintenance and security tasks. Users have no privacy expectation in the contents of their personal files or any of their use of the School Districts systems. The School District has the responsibility to monitor, track and/or log system use to maintain security and to allocate fileserver space.

The District makes no warranties of any kind, express or implied, that the functions or the services provided by or through the district network will be errorfree or without defect. The District will not be responsible for any damage users may suffer including, but not limited to, loss of data or interruption of service. The District is not responsible for financial obligations arising through the unauthorized use of the system.

Internet Safety Practices


Keeping our students safe
It is the responsibility of staff and parents to ensure the safe practices of students when using district technology and internet access. Staff and parents should instruct students in proper netiquette and teach safe practices when posting or communicating with others on the internet. Parents are responsible for monitoring their students use of the district system and district educational technologies, even if the student is accessing the district system from home or a remote location. In order to utilize the district technology resources, students and their parents/guardians must agree to follow the procedures, guidelines, and code of conduct as outlined in the Seaford School District Acceptable Use Policy regulations. A permission form will be signed by the student when he/she enters each of the elementary, middle, and high schools and will govern the status of Internet use during all of the school years at that level. Written parental permission is required at the elementary level.

Accountability
District staff is expected to use good judgment when using technology resources. They should also instruct the students in using the same good judgment. Resources may not be used for any unlawful or prohibited purposes. The use of district technology is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked at any time upon violation of the terms of use.

Internet Access in School


What is available and why?
Students and staff have daily access to various forms of technology in school. This includes computers, laptops and tablets with internet access, Smart Boards, audio/visual equipment and networks. These tools are available for student and staff use in order to supplement the learning process and provide a means for research, collaboration, communication and technology instruction.

Consequences
Any person in violation of the district AUP will face the following consequences of misuse: *Students who misuse the policy will receive consequences as prescribed by the Seaford School District Code of Conduct such as: Loss of privileges Staff-student-parent conference Detention Suspension Expulsion Referral to appropriate police agency * Community members who misuse district technology will lose future privileges and may be referred to the appropriate police agency depending upon the infraction. *Staff who violate this policy and its regulations may have their privileges revoked and may face additional consequences consistent with the procedures of the Seaford School District, the collective bargaining agreements between the Seaford School District and its affiliated Bargaining Units, and with state and federal laws.
