Common Core: F-TF Prove and apply trigonometric identities 9. Prove the addition and subtraction formulas for sine, cosine, and tangent and use them to solve problems. (Prior Knowledge)4. Use the unit circle to explain symmetry (odd and even) and periodicity of trigonometric functions. I looked at the common core state standards and this is all I could find for sum, difference, half-angle, and double-angle formulas. All of the other core standards have dealt with material we have already covered in class and things we have not covered yet. HSCE: (Prior Knowledge) *A1.1.7 Transform trigonometric expressions into equivalent forms using basic identities such as sin^2 + cos^2 =1 and tan^2 + 1 = sec^2 A3.7.1 Use the unit circle to define sine and cosine; approximate values of sine and cosine; use sine and cosine to define the remaining trigonometric functions; explain why the trigonometric functions are periodic A3.7.2 Use the relationship between degree and radian measures to solve problems. A1.2.10 Use special values of the inverse trigonometric functions to solve trigonometric equations over specific intervals. My Standards: Using the half-angle and double-angle formulas to solve trigonometric equations.

Understandings
Overarching Understanding Students will use prior knowledge of the unit circle, trigonometric functions, and trigonometric identities to understand how to simplify, prove, and solve trigonometric equations now involving addition formulas. Students will understand that using sum and difference, halfangle, and double angle formulas can help simplify the problem and make it easier to solve. Students will understand when to use the formulas in different types of trig equations. Students will understand the differences between the formulas and why they need to use them to solve the problems. Students will continue to learn and understand proving trigonometric functions using the trig identities and the other

Essential Questions
Overarching Can you think of a strategy to help you solve this problem? Is there a way to use prior knowledge to simplify the equations? Have I seen a problem similar to this one before? How would I start this problem? Can I use other Topical When do we use the sum and difference formulas? Why do we use these formulas? How do these formulas help us? How did we prove the formulas? Do we always need to use these formulas to help solve the trig equations?

formulas learned this chapter. Related Misconceptions Students may mix up the sum and difference formulas for sine, cosine, and tangent because they dont fully understand the concept and when to use it. Students may have trouble solving equations with the formulas form this chapter (students are struggling solving trig equations using trig identities right now). They need to use prior knowledge from other math classes and the last chapter we covered. Students may not understand how or why the new formulas work and how they help solve the equations. Students may cancel out trigonometric terms that cannot cancel leading to incorrect solutions when solving trig equations. (They have trouble remember prior knowledge from their last math class to help solve these equations)

formulas/identities to help solve this problem? Do I understand with the problem is asking me to do? Are there multiple ways to solve this problem? What do I know about this problem? How can explain my reasoning for solving this problem the way I did? If I get stuck, do I have another plan to help solve the problem?

How is this related to our last few chapters? When do we use the half-angle and double-angle formulas? Why are the cosine, sine, and tangent formulas different? How do we prove the trig functions using the new formulas?

Knowledge
Students will know

Objectives Skills
Students will be able to Students will use the sum and difference, half-angle, and double-angle formulas to solve trigonometric equations. Students will use the formulas to help simplify the trigonometric equations. Students will use the sum and difference formulas to compute exact values of tangent, cosine, and sine. Students will use prior knowledge and understanding of the new formulas to know when and where the formulas need to be used. The students will interpret and solve the various different problems using the new formulas from the chapter. Students will remember how to interpret values of cosine, sine, tangent, and cotangent from the unit circle.

Students will know and understand that the sum and difference formula is used to evaluate exact values of cosine, sine, and tangent (trig functions) when the values are unknown. Students will know that the half-angle and double-angle formulas are used to prove, simplify, and solve trigonometric equations and functions for exact answers. Students will know how to recognize when and where to use the different formulas discovered in this chapter. Students will know how to use the formulas to evaluate trig functions at different angles, simplify, prove, and solve trig equations. Students will be able to obtain the double-angle formulas from the sum and difference formulas. Students will understand the meaning behind double-angle and half-angle formulas (why they are called this). Students will understand what the coefficient in front of the x in

the equation (2 or ) means. Students will understand that the sum and difference, half-angle, and double-angle formulas are used to find the exact unknown values of trigonometric functions and equations.

Students will use the new formulas to simplify and prove different trigonometric functions and equations. Students will need to justify why they used the formulas they did to solve, prove, and simplify functions and equations. Students will need to know and understand the new formulas learned during the chapter.

Assessment Evidence (Stage 2) Performance Task Description

Goal Students who are able to understand the sum and difference, half-angle, and double-angle formula and understand when and where to use it will be able to do well on the assessment. The students will be able to build on prior knowledge to determine known values of trigonometric functions. They will also be able to prove, simplify, and solve more challenging trig functions using prior knowledge and new formulas learned this chapter. The assessment covers all of chapter 10 (which is only 4 sections). The assessment will build off of prior knowledge (the previous two chapters). My mentor teacher and I will be evaluating the assessment given to the students. The assessment will be completed by the students during class at the completion of the unit (December 4th). The chapter test will be completed with all work shown and justification shown where needed.

Other Evidence

During the chapter, every Wednesday the students take a cooperative quiz. This will help the teachers assess the students understanding of the material and concepts on a weekly basis. With the information gathered from the quizzes, the teachers can then reevaluate and discuss if the students need more or less time on the material. The students will also work in groups on a daily basis to discuss mathematical concepts and ideas. The teachers will also have classroom discussions to engage all of the students and get everyones ideas and opinions of the concepts and the lesson. The teacher will use teacher moves such as probing, wait time, and others to assess the students learning in the classroom.
