TEACHERS NAME: Katie Collins SUBJECT/S: Phonics TIME FRAME: 85 minutes total Hook- 2 minutes Teaching Content(whole group)- 17 minutes Guided Practice (small groups)- 15 minutes (per group-4) Independent Practice- 5 minutes Closure- 1 minute NJCCCS AND COMMON CORE INDICATOR(S): CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.5- With guidance and support from adults, explore word relationships and nuances in word meanings. ENDURING UNDERSTANDING: I want my students to understand that numerals can also be represented by number words. ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S): What number words represent numerals and why are they important? LESSON OUTCOMES Content Outcome: The students will know to differences and similarities of numerals and number words. Performance Outcome: The students will be able to match numerals and number words. CONTENT SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE: This lesson is a reinforcement lesson from what was taught the day before. In this Phonics lesson, students are focusing on locating numerals and their number words in text. Students will need to know the differences and similarities in order to complete this whole group and small group lesson. Prior to this lesson, students were introduced to the number words through a short poem on the pocket chart. Students will continue to use this pocket chart to help reinforce numerals and number words and will need to complete an individual assessment during center time. To prepare myself for this lesson, I need to understand the concept myself and recognize where students may need to be challenged further or where they will need more guidance. By the end of this Phonics lesson, students will understand which number words have the same meanings as the numerals. They will be able to match these two concepts on their own. ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING: For the first portion of this lesson, students will be taught in a whole group. Because this lesson is reinforcement, students should have some background knowledge on this content. To assess their learning, students will complete the Number Words and Numerals worksheet individually during small group center instruction that is led by the teachers aide. This worksheet caters to each students learning ability by allowing them to take their time to create, color, identify, and match numerals and number words. Once the worksheets have been completed, they will be collected to check for understanding. However, these worksheets will not be used towards a grade. CONNECTIONS: Describe how this lessons background preparation, content, practice, and follow-up will connect to the following, which are critical to learning success: GRADE: Kindergarten LESSON & UNIT TOPIC: Locating Numerals and Number Words in Text/Phonics

prior learning- The students have been practicing their numerals and number words in a previous phonics lesson. In that lesson, students were introduced to the number words. This lesson will be used for reinforcement so that students are able to practice this concept. content and instruction in other subject areas- This is not only a phonics lesson, but this also allows students to practice their numerals from mathematics. Students will be able to make connections to math once they begin to practice their numerals and number words. varied cultural perspectives and/or contributions- During this lesson, students will be working in small groups to complete the Number Words and Numerals worksheet assignment. Students will be communicating with students from other cultures and will, equally, contribute in determining the which number words corresponds with which numerals. home and family- Students will be able to look at numbers at home and with their families. Worksheets will be sent home with the students for further practice. use of technology- During center time, students will work on their phonics with the Smart Board and the computers. Also, students will use Leap Pads to help them with reading. learning community principles Students will be working together with matching number words and numerals during center time. erasers LEARNING EXPERIENCE STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE: Hook I will ask the students to please remind me what we had worked on yesterday during our phonics lesson. I will tell students that we are going to continue working with our numerals and number words on our poem on the pocket chart. Teaching of Content Describe, step-by-step, how you will teach the actual content. This might be through talk, demonstration, text reading, read aloud, student investigation, viewing video, viewing visuals, and/or other approaches. I will tell the students that they are going to find numerals and number words in text. I will ask the students to please read me the poem on the pocket chart. I will introduce them to the number word cards and the matching activity. I will have the number cards and matching words on the left side of the pocket chart. I will tell the students that we are going to read and match numerals and number words today. We will read the poem again with the numerals, and then we will read it again with the numbers spelled out. I will ask the students to stretch the words where necessary. Then I will tell them that we are going match the number words and the numerals. Next, I will show the children the words cards outside of the chart. I will ask someone to please find the number 1 on our number cards. I will have another volunteer find the numeral 1, and then show the children how to match it with the text by placing the card over the number on the sentence strip. I will show the students how to check to be sure the number matches. I will continue matching until the children have found all of the numerals and placed them over the numerals on the sentence strip. Next, I will tell the students that we are going to match the number words. I will ask for a volunteer to find the word one. The volunteer will find the word one and place it over the word one in the text. I will then ask the students how we can check to make sure that we are correct. We will continue finding words until all the words are matched. I will tell the students that they will be using a Number Words and Numerals worksheet to help them practice on their own. I will also show the students the centers that they will be going to that day and I will ask to see my red group. In the small group that I will be working with, I will listen to the students read to themselves and to a partner. I will make notes on concepts that the students may need to work on.

As I am working with my small group, other groups will either be working on the worksheet, in their centers, or reading a book. Checking for Understanding The students will be asked the questions that are shown below. They will answer the questions aloud. I will ask students at random while I am making my way around the classroom. How can we check to see if we are correct? Guided Practice The students will be working on their numerals and number words during whole group instruction. This guided practice will be about 15-20 minutes to help students to grasp this concept. Students will use the poem on the pocket chart to match numerals and number words. This will allow students to see a relationship between these two concepts. Independent Practice In small groups table work, students will be working on Number Words and Numerals worksheet independently. Students will need to apply their knowledge of the mini phonics lesson that was taught to them and apply it in the assignment. These worksheets will be collected to check for understanding. Closure Students will be asked to share what we learned today in the phonics lesson. I will show them two numerals and number words and ask students to read them to me.
