U.S.history:Commerce and industry, Technology, Physical and human geography

THEME: The Civil War LESSON TOPIC: The role of resources during the Civil War. OBJECTIVES: Language:
Students will draw pictures pictures of resources according to which side they wereproduced. Students must read their textbook to identify which resources were produced inthe north and south states. Students will then write five sentences about why having aresource was a beniefit in the war and why a lack of a resource was a weakness in thewar.

Content:
The students will be able to identify each sides benefits and weaknesses due to theabudance or shortage of a resource. This will develop understanding of why either thenorth or south had a better chance of winning the war before it began.

LEARNING STRATEGIES: Visual learning, Modeling, graphic organizer KEY VOCABULARY: Resource, population, agriculture, ammunition, textiles MATERIALS: Worksheet that lists the North and South and a key of how to draw
resources.Extra space to write a reponse to the resource task.

MOTIVATION:
(Building background) Have the children make a list before class starts, of the things they would need in order to be asoldier in going to war. By having the student's choose what they would need, it makes them more involoved to see if there is anything they missed.

PRESENTATION:
(Language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, feedback) After the students make their own list they will share their answers with a partner and write atleast one choice on the board. After they do this I will ask some quick questions about their answers and introduce the vocabulary words. Next, I will pass out their worksheet and we will begin reading the section of the book about resources during the Civil War together.

PRACTICE AND APPLICATION: (Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application, feedback)
Group work by sharing answers, sharing answers with the class on the board. Building the the graphic organizer of resources. The Resources worksheet. Reading the section in the textbook together as a class.

REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT: (Review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning)


The objectives will be assessed in the worksheet by using the vocabulary words. The students

willbe assessed on the answers to their worksheet along with their response to the benefits andweaknesses of resources during the Civil War.

EXTENSION:
Students will write five sentences for homework about the benefits and weaknesses of resources during the CivilWar.
