The APR9600 based Voice Module consists of the experimental board, an electret microphone, a speaker and other components

as shown in Fig. 2.6. For Recording Messages, the Chip-Enable (CE) pin no. 23 on the APR9600 was set to low. That was achieved by pressing the switch SW9 on the board. Then the slide switch connected to Pin no. 27 was set to low to enable recording mode. To actually start the recording, low signal was applied on the message trigger pins. By pressing the any one of the switches 1 through 8, the respective message trigger pin M1 through M8 was triggered to low. A single beep signaled the start of recording which continued as long as the message trigger pin was kept low. Busy Indicator LED connected to pin no. 10 glowed till the message trigger pin was kept low. Also the LED connected at strobe pin (Pin no. 22) flashed while recording. A beep was heard when message trigger pin was made high which indicated the end of message recording and both the LEDs went off. Two beeps would be heard in case of a memory overflow. For Message Playback, the Chip-Enable (CE) pin no. 23 on the APR9600 was set to low. But the slide switch connected to Pin no. 27 was set to high to enable playback mode. To start playing the specific recorded message, low signal was applied on the specific message trigger pin. By pressing the any one of the switches 1 through 8, the respective message trigger pin M1 through M8 was triggered to low. The message is heard at the speaker. Busy Indicator LED connected to pin no. 10 glowed till the message trigger pin was kept low. Also the LED connected at strobe pin (Pin no. 22) flashed while playback. When message trigger pin was made high, both the LEDs went off indicating end of playback. If a different message trigger pin was pressed during playback, the playback would stop immediately (indicated by one beep) & playback of new message would begin. In the FMBWCN Aid, only the playback system was used in real time depending upon the different sets of fingers flexed. The recording system was used only once before use of the Aid to record messages such as hungry, thirsty, toilet, etc. Hence with the APR 9600 Voice Module, persons with voice problems can communicate with the environment for their basic needs.
