Background
Was born on September 17, 1892, in Topeka, Kansas died on September 11, 1978, in San Diego, California Spent a lot of his childhood in the Navajo reservation. Grew up with the Navajo children and learned their language and customs. As an adult, he became an engineer and lectured about the Navajos

Got the idea to attempt a way to code military communications using the Navajo language a newspaper story.
