A SAD STORY

Three men came to New York for holidays. They went to a very large hotel and took a room there. Their room was on the forty fifth floor. In the evening the three men went to a variety show and came back to the hotel at midnight. "I am very sorry," said the hall porter of the hotel, "But our lifts do not go up at this hour. If you do not want to walk up to your room, you will have to sleep in the hall." "No, no," said one of the three men, "no, thank you. We shall walk up to our room." Then he turned to his two friends and said, "It is not easy to walk up to a forty fifth floor, but I think I know how to make it easier. I shall tell you some jokes, then you, Andy, will sing us some songs, then you, Jack, will tell us some interesting adventures of yours." So they began to walk upstairs to their room. Tom told them a funny story, Andy sang some songs. At last they reached to the thiry seventh floor. They were already very tired. "Well," said Tom, "Now it is your turn, Jack. Tell us one or two adventures while you were haunting in the american forest. ". "I am going to tell you a story," said Jack. "It is neither ineteresting nor long but is sad enough. We left the key to our room in the hall." The other day I happened to meet Peter in the Street. With a sad face he told me why and how he and his tow friends had come to spend a never to be forgotten night on the landing between the thirtyseventh and thirty-eight floor of the hotel they had been staying at while on holiday in N. Y.
