Assignment 1 CHE594 Chemical Reaction Engineering *Attention: Answer all questions and submit it to Dr Jefri Jaafar (office level

10) before 11am 12 April 2013 The liquid phase reaction A + B C follows an elementary rate law and is carried out isothermally in a flow system. The concentrations of A and B in the feed streams are 2M before mixing. The volumetric flow rate of each stream is 5 dm 3/min and the entering temperature is 300K. The streams are mixed immediately before entering. Two reactors are available; a grey 200 dm3 CSTR that can be heated to 77C or cooled to 0C. The other one is a white 800 dm3 PFR, operated at 300K, that cannot be heated or cooled but can be painted red or black. Additional information: k = 0.07 dm3/mol.min at 300K E = 20 kcal/mol a) Recommend the reactor and conditions of reaction required for this system. Explain the reason of your choice and justify your choice with appropriate evidences (e.g. cost, space, weather, color etc.) b) Determine the time needed to achieve 90% conversion in a 200 dm3 batch reactor with CA0 = CB0 = 1M after mixing at a temperature of 77C. c) If the reactor were cooled to 0C, how would your answer to part (b). d) Explain your concerns if the reaction will be carried out at higher temperatures. e) Determine the batch reactor volume would be necessary to process the same amount of species A per day in flow reactor if the conversion not less than 90%. Based on Table 1, estimate the cost of batch reactor. f) Describe what have you learned from the problem.
