Teachers Page Task Card 2 Recycling Year Four

Lesson Overview
To provide students with an interactive technology based experience where they will investigate what can and cant be recycled in their local area. To support students to articulate why placing non-recyclable items in the recycling bin is problematic. To investigate the properties of plastic and to discover why plastic is harmful to our environment and how recycling helps to reduce its impact. The lesson has been designed to support students of mixed abilities and varying preferred learning styles.

Key Lesson Outcomes

Declarative Knowledge Students will know: Procedural Knowledge Students will be able to:

That recycling symbols with the numbers 1 Identify what is, and is not, recyclable in and 2 on the labels of items can be recycled their local area. and that the numbers 3-7 are not usually Articulate why placing non-recyclable items accepted for recycling in the recycling bin is problematic. That Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) used for soft drink bottles and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) used for milk bottles Links to Critical and Creative Thinking are two types of plastic commonly recycled Students will be able to: in Australia. That different types of glass melt at different Identify and clarify information and ideas temperatures which leads to contamination Students will develop skills of: problems. Inquiring identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas

Australian Curriculum
In Year 4, students broaden their understanding of classification and form and function through an exploration of the properties of natural and processed materials. They learn that natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties and that these properties can influence their use. They carry out investigations considering how the properties of materials affect the management of waste or can lead to pollution.

Equipment
For the Class: Materials for Recycling Relay game For Each Student: Recycling PRO worksheet Computer and internet access Writing equipment and glue

Preparation
Prepare recycling PRO worksheets for each student and for class science journal. Prepare materials for Recycling Relay game. o List of recyclable and non-recyclable items for curbside collection in your local area

o 4 tubs labeled Recycling Bin o 4 tubs labeled Rubbish Bin o 4 cardboard boxes (for mixed items)

Lesson Steps
Introduction: Class Survey and Discussion Ask students to indicate, by a show of hands, who recycles in their home? What are some of the items they recycle? Body: Allocate each student a computer with internet access. Students to complete Digital Task Card 2 Students to complete the POE worksheet. To be glued into their science workbooks. Whole Class Conclusion: Playing the game: Recycling Relay 1. Split the class into four groups. You will need four sets of materials (both recyclables and

non-recyclables as listed above) mixed up and separated into four cardboard boxes, four rubbish bins and four recycling bins.

2.

Line up the four groups side by side with the box of mixed recyclable and non-recyclable

items next to the first person in the relay. Place a recycling and a rubbish bin opposite each group at whatever distance you prefer.

3.

When told to go, the first student in each group must take one of the items from the box,

run to their set of bins, and place their item into the correct bin, before returning and tagging the next person in the team.

4.

This continues until all the items in their box have been sorted (this may require rotating

through the group two or possibly three times depending on the number of students per group, and the number of items to be sorted).

5.

The winning team is the first to finish with all items in the correct bin.
