PUPPETS

The situation
In small groups no bigger than 3 you will need to create your own puppet. There are many different types of puppets and you will need to research and create
your own puppet.
Work though the design process to complete a well finished puppet.
You will need to think of someone/thing that would like/need a puppet and create your own design brief, constraints and considerations.

For example:
The Melbourne preforming arts centre is looking for designers to create their puppets for a new play called dragon and dungeons. They want a small group of
teenagers to use their imagination to create a puppet. These puppets must be professional. You will need to go through each design step and create a well
detailed folio to present to them at the end of the term.
They are happy for you to use your imagination and come up with something interesting and unique. They are concerned about the cost and it cannot be any
more expensive than $50 to make. They dont mind what material you use but it has to be easy to find.
The puppet must not be too big and need to be able to be transported easily so they do not get damaged.

Your design folio must have the following

TOPIC

DESCRIPTION

DATE DUE

Start the project

Get into groups and rewrite design brief, constraint and considerations.

19th/4

Analysing the
problem

Possible environmental and social impacts, materials you could use

26th/4

Researching

Expand on the information from above.

Look at other examples

26/4

Ideas

Record all ideas using words and pictures

3/5

Final solution

Your first idea may not be the best solution you may need to combine several ideas to come up with
your final solution

3/5

Working drawings

Create a detailed list of

1.
Create a working drawing ( orthogonal drawing)
2.
Procedures of how you will make it
3.
Material list
4.
Cost involved

3/5

Making the product

Record what/how you have made your product.

Keep a log book and take photos. Keep it up to date to help you stay on top of your work load.

21/6

Testing and
evaluating

You need to test whether or not your design has solved the problem
Evaluate your product, how you think you worked. Its important that you go into detail.

28/6

Hand in folio/ and

complete puppet.

The folio and puppet is due last day of term. It can be handed in before this date.
All the information above must be presented in your folio.

28/6

APPROVED BY
TEACHER

Assessment rubric
You will be assessed as a group
TOPIC
worked safely

6
Student almost never displays disruptive
behaviour during class

3
Student understood the safety rules but
could be lead astray.

1
Would need to be reminded of safety
procedures.

0
Students was constantly not
safe in the work room,

Level of
engagement with
group

Student proactively contributed to group by

offering ideas , working together effectively, and
helped throughout the whole process

Usually helps to complete group goals,

assised team members in the finished
project

Students rarely contribute. Finishes

individual task but does not assist team
members

Student never contributes to

helping the group, does not
work well with others.

researching

Students properly gathers information from a

range of sources

Well organised but demonstrated illogical

sequencing

Information in gathered from limited

resources

Ideas/ drawing

Student could independently come up with ideas

and express them onto paper

Students require some assistance to

produce ideas are clear and under to stand

Students require teacher constant

assistance. More drawing and ideas are
needed.

Weakly organised
information and needs to go
into more detail.
Student does not make any
attempt to understand and
learning these techniques.

Testing and
evaluating

Students make appropriate suggestions for

changes to that would lead to an improved
outcome. They use a range of suitable safe testing
methods in this analysis. They relate their findings
to the purpose for which the product and/or
system was designed

Suggest modifications to improve their

products in light of evaluation of their
performance, function and appearance.
Evaluation is clear but more detail is
needed

Students do not understand that

importance of this step and need to use
more detail in their folio evaluating and
testing stage

No testing of the product was

carried out. Evaluating was
minimal

Finished product

End product relates exactly to the design brief. The

product has been finished with care

Product has been finished with care

Presented

Folio is presented in a clear, complete and concise

way. It is creatively enhanced and organised.

Folio is mostly clear, reasonable and easy

to follow while also engaging

Some of the folio is clear and readable, but

more care needs to be taking into making it
flow on from each design step.

Product has not been finished

and has not used the design
steps to keep up to date,
Folio is unclear, and not
concise

Problem solving

Actively seeks and suggest solving to problem

Improves on solutions suggested by others

Does not offer solutions but is willing to try

solutions suggested y others

TOTAL/
COMMENTS

Does not try and solve

problem or help others solve
problems

POINTS

This will help you get started. This information needs to be presented at the end of the term in your folio!
You need to work through this design process to complete this task.
1.

DESIGN BRIEF: re write your own design brief(a design brief describes everything, what you are to do, how and why)

3. DESIGNING AND DEVELOPING

a) Make a mood board of all things that interest you and you could use toward your puppet.
b) Research puppets ideas, how they are made, how they are used.
c) Start to draw some ideas, of what you want
d) Create a working drawing of what you will make
e) Make a production list of how you will actually make this puppet
f)

Create a list of materials and tools that you will use, this could include a price list of materials

g) Keep a log book of how you have made this puppet. Its important to write any information about how you overcame problems how did you come up
with certain ideas

4. EVALUATION

Test your puppet does it actually work.

Answer in detail your evaluation questions.
How well do you think you worked, what worked well what didnt?
Explain how you went working in a group? Positives negatives?

5. PRESENT FOLIO
Create your folio. Remember it must be easy to follow the design process. It can be digital or hard copy.
