Resources and Organisation:

INTRODUCTION -Ss have now learnt their first major -T allows Ss to enter the classroom - Having enough aprons and important role of the workshop. Maintaining 11:35 -T shows Ss where the aprons and safety glasses are safety glasses for the entire class. and wearing PPE at all times store it located on entry to the room. appropriately between lessons. -Ss put on their PPE (personal protective equipment) for the remainder of the lesson. Ss take their places around - Students should never stray from full the classroom at their woodwork benches. correct PPE attire -T praises Ss for their immediate good behavior in the classroom and wearing their PPE correctly. Using eye contact & names to engage the Ss.

-T: Boys if I could turn your attention to the 11:40 -T makes first reference to the questions and table he has -Whiteboard and marker whiteboard, I have written up 10 important on the whiteboard. Gives all the Ss 1min to read the 10 - Technology safety sheet with safety questions about the workshop. I will questions. questions give you 1min to read and then we will go -T asks students for their input on the first question, and through and Id like some input on your then progresses down the list. thoughts. - T: Ok class, first question, Replacing all tools back in their storage position after us. Safe or unsafe? - Ss: Safe sir -T: Correct David, because a clean work shop is a safer workshop. - T: Continues with the other 9 questions - Ss: Answer the questions Answering these questions will help both the Ss answering the questions and the other Ss listening in. The T will also receive good feedback on what the Ss remember and what they need to revise. -T: Asks the Ss if anyone knows what 11:50 T: Will give a brief presentation on how to go about - Try square timber grain is, and why its important? properly marking out a piece of timber that needs to be - Metal rule -Ss will have input dependent on knowledge cut. This will include the following: - Pencil -Ss hopefully will answer the questions correctly, they have previous knowledge due to their OnGuard safety training modules. -If need be the T will remind the Ss to have their hand up when answering a question. -T should refer to Ss by name to engage the class.

Comment [ACU7]: use of of classroom communication

-T will demonstrate the marking out of timber so that the Ss will know how to do so. Then move on to demonstrating how to cut the timber. -Ss: Sir why is cutting with the grain easier? T: Well cutting with the grain is cutting with the fibre structure of the timber and not trying to go against its dense makeup.

-Previously drawn picture of timber grain structure on the -Ss will hopefully be engaged and listening to what they board must do. They will learn about grain structure, with the grain and against the grain cuts. And how to markout. Having enough materials and tools for the entire class. T: Will give a brief presentation on how to go about cutting out the piece of timber. - Bench hook - Tenon saw - Timber

DEVELOPMENT -Ss attempting the marking out of the timber 11:55 -Ss will now attempt the marking out procedure before will display an indicator straight away showing it to the T before moving on. whether they have learnt the technique -T will move between the work benches seeing how the straight away or will pick it up as they go. students are going. -Ss may ask questions or for the T to reshow -T will allocate the Ss who can move onto cutting with them certain parts of the exercise. hand tools and which Ss must re-attempt -Ss: Sir is this done correctly? -T: Yes Sam you may move on/ Almost Sam, you just need to add this to it and youll be done -Ss will be quietly attempting their own work piece. Demonstrating whether they have learnt how to safely use certain hand tools yet. -T: Make sure you use the pistol grip on the saw to get a safer, straighter cut. -Ss: How do I get a straighter cut? Or How can I make the start easier? -T: By using your thumb nail and the tough skin on your knuckle, you can use it as a guide for the saw blade. -Ss: Can we cut another piece? -T: Sure, if you want to cut the workpiece again or if you think you are comfortable 12:00 -Ss will now attempt the cutting out procedure before showing it to the T before moving on. -T will move between the work benches seeing how the students are going. -T will alert the Ss who can are using the saw inappropriately or if there is a better way to do something. -It will be apparent straight away which Ss will excel in these practical activites and which Ss will need to put in extra effort, its just that kind of task. -Ss will have plenty of chances to master their starting cuts, their safe cuts, as well as their against the grain cuts with plenty of timber and cutting space on their 120mm pieces of timber.

- Try square - Metal rule - Pencil - Timber

- Bench hook - Tenon saw - Timber Having enough materials and tools for the entire class.

with what youve done, change the direction of your cut against the grain.

-Ss demonstrate a use of tools, materials and techniques in a responsible and safe manner in each design project

-Ss: Sir ive finished early can I move on? T: Good job on the cut Jordan, heres a worksheet. -Ss are now attempting a worksheet that depicts a dozen scenarios where unsafe procedures are being completed. The Ss job is to annotate these pictures with what is wrong. - This activity shows the level of knowledge in terms of workshop safety and the improvement of the Ss. -Ss are demonstrating their knowledge in risk management strategies, responsible behaviour in working environments and Occupational Health and Safety practices (now referred to as Workplace safety policies)

12:15 -Once the T is happy with an individual Ss work that has Safety activity sheet been presented to them. They may hand out the final sheet task to the Ss. Having enough worksheets for the entire class. -Ss will now attempt the safety worksheet. -T will explain that the Ss will have around 15minutes to do so before they go over the answers and reasons for each unsafe practice. -T will move around the class helping individual Ss on depictions that the Ss dont fully understand or recognize safety isses. This is a great way in assessing which students have knowledge of these issues and which students still need to put in effort on learning these. -Ss are testing themselves with some easy, moderate and difficult safety scenarios to categorise.

CLOSURE -T: So class what was wrong in the last -T will by now have made his way through all the Ss Safety worksheet picture on the page? Did anyone think of 12:30 helping out, but will now ask a few Ss to share their what safety issue is present? interpretations and answers of some of the harder safety Having enough worksheets for -S: I think the issue was with the lighting in issues on the worksheet. the entire class. the room. -T: Spot on Jarrod, a workroom in bad -T should thank the class for such a well worked lesson lighting is an unsafe workroom because and for the great start all the Ss have made to their some hazards could be hidden. woodwork lessons. As well as commend Ss for their effort on the practical task. By hearing insight into what a Ss thinks about a safety scenario, a T can determine -When the class is quiet they will be dismissed, leaving what the Ss think is appropriate in the Tech their PPE in the correct storage places on the way out. rooms.
