1 By the end of the topic students should have an understanding of number systems and be able to manipulate numbers in given situations. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: Round off any decimal to a given number of decimal places Students should already know: Whole numbers Rounding off and approximating whole numbers Guided discovery, Exposition In rounding off a decimal to n decimal places we look at the digit value of the (n + 1) digit, if the digits value is greater than five or equal to five we add one to the previous digit otherwise we drop the digit. Express the following numbers correct to the number of decimal places stated a. b. c. d. e. f. 16.08 correct to 1 decimal place 47.42 correct to 1 decimal place 84.345 correct to 2 decimal places 98.4283 correct to 2 decimal places 129.09781 correct to 3 decimal places 3.999 correct to 2 decimal places = 6.1 = 7.4 = 84.35 = 98.43 = 129.098 = 4.00

The teacher and students will discuss the term/concept rounding off highlighting the rules that govern the process of rounding of decimals The teacher with the assistance of the students will work a few examples on the board thus giving students a chance to see the rules in operation The students will then be given a set of decimal to round off to given decimal places, as the teacher walk around to mark students work and assist those who need a little more help. The students will be give an exercise to do for home work
