Steps/Content:

Eg.

5000 = 5 1000 = 5 103

Eg2.

768500 = 7.685 100000 = 7.685 105

Eg3.

0.003 = = 3 10-3

Eg.4

0.06347

=
= 6.347 10-2

In standard form when you move the decimal point to the left (the number to the right) the index to which the ten is raised is POSITIVE. When you move the point to the right (the number to the left) the index to which the ten is raised is NEGATIVE. 8954 0.000365 = = 8.954 103 3.65 10-4

The teacher and students will explore the concepts of writing a number in standard form With the use of examples the teacher will bring across each rule that apply to the writing of numbers in standard form The teacher with the assistance of the students will work a few examples on the board thus giving students a chance to see the rules in operation

The students will then be given a set of number to write in standard form, as the teacher walk around to mark students work and assist those who need a little more help. The teacher and the students will then work the questions given on the board and then they will be given a new set of numbers to do without assistance. This process will be repeated until the students are able to write the numbers given in standard form correctly without assistance
