Material type is the most important field in this screen. It controls how the material behaves in the material master as well as across the supply chain. For example, the material type determines all of the following
o o o o o
Price Control ( Standard or Moving Average ) Item Category Group ( NORM.. etc ) Views ( A material master has so many views that will be discussed soon ) Valuation Category Procurement type And much more.
Step No. 3 : Now after the material name has been entered, hit enter and you will be prompted to choose the views. The material type defines the views. For now, lets choose the following views as relevant for SAP MM training.
Step No.4 In this step, we select the organizational levels. Organizational levels are org units that this material will be created for. For example, a material could be restricted to a particular purchasing organization. If you need to use that material for a different purchasing organization, the material needs to be extended. Lets choose Plant 1200 and storage location 0001
Step No. 5 Enter the basic data Material Description : A brief description of the material Base Unit of Measure : There are different units of measure like the base unit of measure, purchasing unit of measure, sales unit of measure, warehouse unit of measure etc. Materials are measured in different units depending on the place where they are used. A soda manufacturing plant might use crates as the unit of measure, whereas the same soda can can be sold in 6-packs in sales.
We are selecting a material group of 001201 which stands for pumps. Material groups can be configured elsewhere and it will be covered as part of our full-fledged SAP MM Training. We also enter a division of 01 which stands for pumps. You can refer to our organization structure tutorial to understand divisions. Item category Group : As the name says, this is a grouping of materials depending on attributes. This field can be used as the origin point for procurement proposal or for return deliveries in purchasing. Item category group in the sales view is used extensively in SD to determine item category. Here are some standard item categories VERP packaging NLAG Non stock material DIEN Service with delivery BANS Third Party Item LEIH Returnable packacing Click on the drop down for the general item category group to learn more. This finishes the basic data tab. Now, lets move on to the purchasing tab Step No. 6 : After you hit enter, if there are no more mandatory fields to be filled in the basic data, the focus automatically moves to the next selected view, which in this case is purchasing. Some fields are repeated here like the description, unit of measure, Material group etc. As discussed previously, there could be multiple units of measure depending on the function where the material is being used like sales, purchasing, manufacturing etc. Here you can select a different unit of measure which becomes the purchasing unit of measure. Plant Specific Material Status : This field is used to restrict the material to a particular function Like Blocked for procurement, Blocked for Task List Blocked for Purchasing, Blocked for costing etc. Tax Indicator for Material : This defines the taxability from a procurement perspective. For sales, there is another indicator in the sales tab that defines the taxability
Material Freight Group: This is used to finally determine the freight code that is used in determining freight prices for that material. For now, we will leave it blank. Automatic PO : This indicator is used to determine if the purchase requisition can be converted to purchase order automatically (although there are other parameters like source of supply, vendor info records etc that should be set ) Batch Management : This field is used to identify if the materials can be used in batches.G/R Processing Time : This is a very important field and will be discussed in full during theSAP Training session. Post to inspection stock : If this field is activated, the system automatically posts the goods receipt into the quality inspection stock ( As opposed to unrestricted or blocked stock ) Quota Arrangement Usage : This field requires extensive explanation regarding vendors, quota, quota file etc and will covered in the SAP MM Training session.

manufacturer). The products (CPUs, Monitors,) can be both stand alone finished products and package components that do not require complicated assemble (only packaging or seperate shipment, so only 1 division is required. Question 2 : How many material groups would you create in this case ? The company has already elected to have a high level of granularity in thier product categories. This may indicate that there are multiple products in each category and the wish to report to these specific categories. In addition the sample desktop PC products are composite packaged products that may be grouped for shipment using a Bill of Materials from the existing material groups or shipped as separate components, so I added 2 material groups package computers and Lap tops. Note: If this company is not the actual manufacter then Lap Tops are sinlgle stand alone components and could have been included in ZLC1 or ZLC2, but what the heck I gave them a separate group. ZLC1 = IBU Intel Based CPU, ZLC2 = ABU AMD Based CPY, ZLC3 =M17 17 Monitors, ZLC4 = M19 19 Monitors, ZLC5 = WM Wired Mouse, ZLC6 = LM Wireless Mouse, ZLC7 = WKB Wired Keyboard, ZLC8 = LKB Wireless Keyboard, ZLC9 = Computer Package, ZLC10 = Lap Top Materails created for DIMOKK-17, LIMOLL-13, DIMOLL-19 for the US sales organization, distribution channel, and division compatible with my test customer 19102. Many of the material attributes were copied from the existing material general information eneterd by other students.

SAP Material Sales Views- SAP Sales & Distribution Training Series Feb 2011 Batch
BY MAGNATRAIN ON FEBRUARY 10, 2011 IN SAP SD TRAINING, SAP TRAINING
This post contains summary of todays SAP SD Training class and exercises on the same. For more details on other SAP Training areas like SAP BW Training or SAP HR Training etc, please visit our Magna Training home page. Yesterday, we have discussed Material Master Basic View 1 and Material Master Basic View 2 in the class. Today, we have discussed the Material Masters Sales Views and here is a brief Summary. Summary : We have discussed that although the SAP Material Master Basic Views are constant for a material, the Sales Views could vary between Sales Organizations. We have discussed some practical situations where such data is useful. We have also discussed the business significance of the most important fields in the Sales View of the SAP Material Master. SAP Material Master Sales Org 1 View Sales Unit of Measure Division Distribution Chain Specific Status Material Group Tax Classification Minimum Order Quantity SAP Material Master Sales Org 2 View Product Hierarchy Sales Material Group 1 through Material Group 5 SAP Material Master Sales General/Plant view Gross Weight Net Weight We have also learnt that there are other fields like Availability Check , Item Category Group, Account Assignment Group etc that are very important for the Sales Processes and that we will be discussing these fields when the corresponding concepts will be discussed. Scenario 1 : ABC Computers Inc Sells computers as discussed in the SAP Material Master Basic View Scenario. This scenario builds up on top of that. The company ABC Computers Inc, sells across the East Coast Sales Organization as well as the South Sales Organization. However, since the margins are too low in the South Sales Organization ( 1000/10/00 ) , the company has decided that they will only sell if the retailer ( Customer 1400 ) orders atleast 30 pieces of the material DIMOKK-17. All the materials that you created in the SAP Material Master Basic View scenario are commercials materials and are hence tax liable. Question 1 : Change the material group in the Sales View of the Material DIMOKK-17 and see the effect of it on the Basic View. Describe what happened ? Question 2 : Configure the minimum order quantity scenario. Can you force the SAP system to not create orders at all if the minimum order quantity is NOT met ?
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 1. 2. 1. 2.
Scenario 2 : The company did some Sales Analysis and found out that a particular model of desktop ( DIMOLL-19 ) is not selling well and wishes to discontinue the product from April 1st, 2011. Question 1 : Configure the material to discontinue from today and describe what happened when you created the order for that material ? Scenario 3 : The company is doing some restructuring and decides to sell spare parts as well ( Like Hard Disks, RAM and other computer parts ). You were asked to create a material HDD250GB similar to DIMOKK-17, but since it could be used both as a Raw material for their finished parts ( Computers ) and sold as a separate part ( Finished Material ) , the company has decided to group it under finished products as well as Raw Materials. Question 1 : Create a separate sales material group HDR ( Hard Disks Raw Material ) , and HDF ( Hard Disks Finished ) . Question 2 : Configure the material HDD250GB with the sales material groups you created. Scenario 4: For better reporting, the company has decided to use a hierarchical product structure/grouping for all their materials. Question 1 : HDD250GB is a PC computer hardware drive. What Product Hierarchy would you use for this.. ? Hint : You have not been taught how to create materials groups ( Groups 1 thorough 5 ) in the class. But this is a very common scenario in SAP, where in you would not know how to configure certain fields. SAP sometimes provides us a pointer as to where in the menu path ( Under SPRO ) the configuration needs to be done. This will be discussed in the next class.

This time the Material group was grayed as I am only extending and I believe during the extension, you can not edit the previously created views. *** Siva correct me if I am wrong.****** Now after extending I went to change mode mm02 and here I could change the data in Material group. Material Types are defined in transaction code [OMS2]. If new material types are required, copy from the existing material type.
We will discuss some important fields in the material type controls. For more, please follow the online SAP Training links or SAP MM Training Online links. General Data:
o o
Field Reference This is used to control the field status of the material type. This controls which fields can be hidden, displayed, made mandatory or optional. These in turn are based on the field selection group. Screen Reference Material Type We normally do not need to touch this field as this is hard coded to show different screens based on the material type. No customization is possible here. Authorization Group Basis Consultants can use this field to restrict access to a particular material type. For example, if you want certain sensitive material types to be used only by a certain group of MRP controllers, then you can use this field. Item Category Group This is an arbitrary grouping of materials. There is no control behind item category groups. They are freely definable. SAP automatically proposes the item category group while creating the material master based on the material type. This field is used to determine the item category in the sales order. This field is found in the Sales view of the material
The user departments specify which views the material master has by default. The views that are selected here are shown in the material master during creation.
Valuation Price Control There are 2 types of price control S Standard Price V Moving average SAP proposes the price control automatically in the accounting views ( Accounting1 view )of the material master during creation. Typically, internally manufactured goods use standard price while externally procured goods have a moving average ( essentially the weighted average of the price and quantities supplied by different vendors ) For example, if the standard price of the product is $100, and if the item is externally procured for $110, then $100 is posted to the stock account and $10 is posted to the price difference account as expenditure. However, in moving average, $110 is posted to stock account. Account Category Reference - This is used in Material Account Determination [OBYC]. Account category is assigned to the valuation class and the valuation class is used to determine the correct G/L account to post to in the MM-FICO automatic account determination for goods movements associated with materials of that account category.
Price Control Mandatory This check mark is used to ensure that the user who created that material master has to enter the cost ( standard or moving average ) Quantity/Value Update Stock keeping can be done both at the quantity level as well as the valuation level.
This is normally done based on valuation area. In this case, for example in valuation area 0001, for material type FERT, both quantity updates and value updates take place.

Material type is generally not changed after creation. However, there are certain movement types ( MM consultants would know them ) that can be used to convert the material type However, many constraints apply Like there should be no stock , no open POs etc. Either way, this is a rare process.

If you wanted to customize this structure you would have to change the PRODHS structure which is outside of the scope of this post and is done by an SAP ABAP consultant. However, if you choose to add new hierarchies based on the already existing structure of ( 5 , 5 and 8 characters ) , you can do the following.
Step No. 1 : Go to [ spro -> IMG -> Logistics General -> Material Master -> Settings for Key Fields > Data Relevant to Sales and Distribution -> Define Product Hierarchies ]
Step No. 3 - You can create your own product hierarchies at any level you like. For example, the following are the standard hierarchies available as part of the standard SAP IDES System.
If you want to add one more to it, say Welding Services, you can do so by going to Step 3. above in the SAP Screen and add
You can see the added SAP product hierarchy if you re-open the material again or wish to create a new one.
Exercise : A company has chosen to offer welding services as a separate product line and wishes to add that to the product hierarchy. Create a new product hierarchy as follows. If they already exist ( have been created by other SAP Training students ) please create your own , by substituting XXX for your own number. 00XXX 00XXX Welding Services Gas Welding Aceylne Welding Ethylene Welding
0000XXXX 00XXX
0000XXXX 0000XXXX
