Science Lesson Plan Teacher: Katelyn Provo Grade Level: 1st School: Donelson Hills Elementary, Waterford, MI Date

& Time: Monday, February 11, 2013, 11:40 am12:15 pm Overall lesson topic/title and purpose: Rock Attributes Report Standards Common Core o P.PM.02.12- Describe objects and substances according to their properties (color, size, shape, texture, hardness, liquid or solid, and sinking or floating). o E.SE.03.13- Recognize and describe different types of earth materials (mineral, rock, clay, boulder, gravel, sand, soil, water, and air). o S.IA.01.13- communicate and present findings of observations. o S.RS.01.11- Demonstrate scientific concepts through various illustrations, performances, models, exhibits, and activities. o S.IP.01.14- Manipulate simple tools (for example: hand lens, pencils, rulers, thermometers, rain gauges, balances, non-standard objects for measurement) that aid observation, and data collection. Learning Goals/ Objectives for todays lesson: Students will use simple tools to identify and describe the specific properties of a rock including shape, color, size, and texture. Students will have the opportunity to share their in-depth observations of a specific rock. Materials & Supplies needed: 5 sets of rocks 25 hand lenses Rock report recording sheets 25 pencils Crayons Poster boards Scientific word list (created in the previous lesson)

Procedures and approximate time allocated for each event

Launch (10 minutes) On Friday, we talked about the words scientists would use to describe a rock. Today, you will choose your very own rock to investigate and report on. Review and discuss the Scientific and Non-scientific Describing Words anchor chart created yesterday Have children turn and talk with a partner about example words they could use to describe the properties of a rock. o A student might say the rock is light yellow instead of saying the rock is pretty. o A student might say the rock is rough instead of saying it feels bad. Today you will be choosing your own rock to investigate and report on. Now, I am going to show you how to fill out your rock report. o First, I need to choose one rock to explore and describe (demonstrate). o Then, I need to draw a picture of my rock (demonstrate). o Next, I need to describe the size of my rock (demonstrate). o Now, I need to describe my rocks color (demonstrate). o Next, I need to describe my rocks shape (demonstrate). o Then, I need to describe how my rock feels (demonstrate). When I call your table group, you can quickly and quietly come get your rock report papers. I will give the rocks to someone at your table. As soon as you have your paper, go back to your seat and start observing your rock and filling out your report.

Explore (15-20 minutes) Independent Practice o Students will receive 1 of 3 independent practice assignments. (Students assignments will be determined by a formative assessment given at the beginning of the unit.) Organizing the students by ability allows the teacher to differentiate the task to be at an appropriate developmental level to further their thinking. Summarize (10 minutes) Call children to attention Students will take turns sharing out their rock reports. Other students will listen and verify whether or not the reports use accurate scientific describing words. o Students with the advanced assignment will share out their presentations last because they created more in-depth presentations.

Assessment Observations during independent work time o Are students applying their knowledge about making and recording observations? o Can the students use scientific tools correctly to help them make observations? Recording sheet o Did students use scientific words to describe their rocks attributes? Class discussion o Can the students identify and communicate the properties of their rocks?

Simplifications Independent practice sheets will be differentiated so that all students are working at an appropriate level. Extensions Independent practice sheets will be differentiated so that all students are working at an appropriate level. Students who finish early will have the opportunity to create a new format for their presentation. Children can create a poster, Power Point, poem, song, or use any other form they choose to creatively present their findings to their classmates.
