Claude Monet

CLAUDE MONET Claude Monet was a famous Impressionist artist, in fact, one of the founders of Impressionism. This name came from a critic simply saying, Its just an impression. Most famous for his waterlily paintings, he had a passion for capturing the light and darkness of a landscape. EARLY LIFE Oscar Claude Monet (some say it is Claude-Oscar Monet) was born on the 14th November 1840, in Paris, France. He was the second child of Louise-Justine Aubre Monet and Claude Adolphe Monet. On the 20th May 1841, he was baptised in the local parish church, Notre-Dame-deLorette, as Oscar-Claude, but his parents called him Oscar. Although he was baptised a Catholic, he later on became an atheist. In 1857, Monet's mother, Louise, died of tuberculosis. In the same year, Monet moved in with his aunt, Marie-Jean Lecadre. A year later Monet met Eugene Louis Boudin, who introduced him to Plein Air (outdoor painting). In 1861, Monet joined the First Regiment of African Light Cavalry in Algeria for a seven-year commitment, but, two years later, when he got typhoid fever, his aunt made him return home and begin an art course at a university. SCHOOL Monet created caricatures of his teachers, fellow students and community when he was 18-19 years of age. He got in trouble for doing these at school, but continued and became very good. He was not fond of school anyway and once said; "School seemed like a prison and I could never bear to stay there, especially when the sunshine beckoned and the sea was smooth." He went to university at cole nationale suprieure des Beaux-Arts (translates to National School of Fine Arts), in Paris, France. FAMILY Monet married his first wife, Camille in 1870, and with her had two children, their names Jean and Michel. Unfortunately, in 1879, she died, and Monet painted her on her deathbed. After her death, Monet became very unhappy, and once attempted suicide by throwing himself into the Seine River.

Monet: 18-19 years old.

In 1892, Monet married Alice Hosched, who already had six children. They originally became acquainted to support each other financially, but married when Alices husband left her. The family decided that they would need a larger house to have enough room, and bought a house in Giverny, France. Here Monet began to paint waterlilies. He became obsessed with capturing the light, darkness, and reflections on the water in his garden. Alice died in May 19th, 1911, and her children were Blanche (Who later married Jean Monet), Germaine, Suzanne, Marthe, Jean-Pierre, and Jacques.

Monet: Later years LATER LIFE Monet contracted retinal disease (cataracts), which is a cover that is formed over the eye, making vision worse. Monets right eye was worse than the left, and was not able to see the colours violet, blue and green. His paintings whilst half blind were very different from the ones before he contracted cataracts. After the surgery, Monet painted Roses, one of his final paintings. Monet died aged 86 in 1926.
