Lesson Plan 1. Title: Chinese New Year 2. Teacher: Debra Reed Assistant: Heather L.

Five -year olds day program 3. Description: Introduction of the Chinese culture while developing emergent reading skills. References: Little Bunny Kung Fu by Regan Johnson 4. Rationale: The children will be introduced to the idea that we have different cultures and beliefs within our classroom; they will learn tolerance and enjoyment of these cultures. The children will be introduced to the idea of repetitive patterns in a story, and understanding story structure. With the use of storytelling, children are developing a lasting enjoyment of books and their content to enhance their academic future. 5. Analysis of prior knowledge: The children may have no knowledge of the Chinese culture. The children are still developing an understanding of story structure and patterns each child is at their own level of literacy development.

Expectations and Standards: Literacy expectation 3.11: shows an understanding of story structure (comment on characters, predict what will happen next, ask appropriate questions) Literacy expectation 3.12: asks questions and makes comments pertinent to the story being read and connects information in books to his/ her personal life experiences. Social studies expectation 5: children participate in activities that reflect the cultures within their classroom and their community Social expectation 4.4: respects the rights of others 7. Objectives: a. Begin to understand differences of cultures within the classroom and school Assessment: Where do you find bamboo and panda bears? What is Kung Fu? Is Kung Fu originally from the United States? Why do you think the bunny is dressed differently? b. Developing knowledge and enjoyment of books Assessment: Leave the flannel board in the library center and see if they play with the pieces. Are they listening to the book or talking? Are they asking questions about the book? Are they guessing what will happen next in the book? Motivational beginning. Give the children bamboo to touch and look at. Ask them if they know what it is.

9. Lesson Activities Activity Logistics: We will start at the circle passing around bamboo. We will discuss where bamboo grows. The children will then be handed a felt piece to add to our flannel story. We will read the book Little Bunny Kung Fu. We will talk about the book. Materials: 1. book 2. bamboo 3. flannel board pieces Classroom Management Strategies: Maintain attention by 1. asking questions while we are reading the book 2. give each child their own flannel piece to participate 3. finish circle time when they are done asking questions or lose interest during the final discussion. 10. Questions: a. Application: What in this book makes you think about Chinese culture? b. Application: Who did the bunny meet first? c. Synthesis: If the bunny lived here what would he cut down instead of bamboo? Whose home would he destroy? d. Comprehension: What happens to the animals when the bunny cuts down their bamboo? e. Analysis: Do you think we should cut down bamboo or trees? 11. Closure: If you knew Kung Fu what would you do? Can you hop to your table? 12. Differentiation of instruction: Provide visual references to the story. Those who have shorter attention spans will be given felt pieces that appear later in the book. 13. Follow-up Chinese clothing, fortune cookies, panda books, and goat hair brushes with ink will be added to the centers for those who are interested in more knowledge of the Chinese culture. A game of Red light green light Kung Fu will be played.
