Teacher Induction

1. Month: August Topic: New Teacher Orientation NTO Rationale: Four days in Grand Rapids where National Heritage Academies corporate office is located. Four days of team building, collaboration and excitement for the up and coming school year. NTO is mandatory for all new teachers. Topics to be covered are: lesson planning using the Common Core, understanding the behavior model, engagement strategies, curriculum and more. While in Grand Rapids teachers will build a network outside of their school building. Who will present: A network of teachers and other professionals within NHA selected months in advance. Goals: To welcome new teachers by setting the tone for the school year. The goal of having teachers excited to be a part of the staff and prepared to use key components of NHAs practices. Month: August Topic: Electronic grade-book/Atschool Rationale: Atschool is the program that all NHA schools use to record grades and attendance. It is vital to the success of grading and reporting that student records are kept daily and accurately. Teachers will feel a decline in their stress level if they begin recording grades early so that progress reports and report cards can be generated easily. Who will present: A teacher leader/mentor Goal: Teacher must quickly learn technology such as electronic grade-book. Using technology to stay organized cuts back on the stress of generating grades for progress reports and report cards this is done automatically using Atschool grade-book. Description: Mentor and Mentee will sit together and add pretend records, grade comments while connecting them to grade level objectives in the program Atschool.

Month: September Topic: Reading Map Reports/Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) Data Rationale: The first two weeks of school students take Map assessments these include: Reading, Language Arts, Math and Science. These scores are generated into teacher reports within forty-eight hours. Teachers need to learn how to access their class reports, read the scores, understand grade level and college readiness targets, and understand student Rasch UnIT (RIT) levels to create a plan for differentiation. Who will present: Teacher leader/mentor Goals: Teachers will learn how to read and use data to plan for differentiation. Description: Using data for Instructional Planning Context: This staff development improves the learning of all students requires skillful school and district leaders who guide continuous instructional improvement. Process: Staff development that improves the learning of all students prepares educators to apply research to decision making. Content: Staff development that improves the learning of all students prepares educators to understand and appreciate all students, create safe, order and supportive learning environments; and hold high expectations for their academic achievement. 4. Month: October Topic: MEAP (teacher video) Rationale: This is a mandatory video for all certified teachers proctoring the MEAP. All proctors sign on to OnCourse (teacher resource videos) watch the video regarding rules and regulations of proctoring the MEAP. Each teacher will answer questions regarding the video and scored. The teacher will sign that they are prepared to deliver/proctor the MEAP and have all of their questions answered. Who will present: A Dean will demonstrate how to access video and answer any unanswered questions.

Goals: To remain in compliance with the states rules of delivering and proctoring the MEAP. Description: Teacher will take the time to view a MEAP video on OnCourse and answer the questions that follow. Month: November Topic: Preparing for parent teacher conferences Rationale: Teachers need to provide the explanation of how to read the graphs on the report cards and how comments are generated. Teachers must be able to articulate how scoring scales are used on report cards, and why we switched from the A-E scale. Teachers should be able to articulate the assignments graded on the report card and the expected amount of time students should practice at home based on grade level. These topics are also discussed in the parent/teacher school handbook and should be a consistent message. Who will present: Teacher leader/mentor Goals: Teachers will be able to explain the report card to parents and answer any of their questions regarding the new format. Description: Teacher will look at a report card and explain the components and rationale. Teacher mentor will explain why we switched from the A-E scales and how the new scales translate for parents. Teacher will review the parent handbook and be able to reference it. 6. Month: December Topic: Schoology/Creating an out of school network Rationale: Schoology is an online resource used by NHA teachers to pose questions and get feedback. Similar to a chat room, Schoology connects all levels of professionals within the NHA organization. The hope is that new teachers will view this as a resource to get outside feedback from other teachers at all levels. When used, a teacher can build a community of professionals feeling more supported and less isolated. Who will present: Mentor or Dean Description: Using a computer sign on to NHA Teacher Experience website and select Schoology. Create a password and user name. Explore the different professional groups within NHA. Consider which groups/networks would be most beneficial to mentees growth and development. Month: January Topic: Classroom Management Rationale: Coming back from long holidays is an opportunity to re-teach classroom expectations. Reteaching expectations is important for students to become quickly re-acclimated to the classroom and set up for success. Who will present: Teacher leader/mentor Goals: Teacher will understand the importance of re-teaching rules and expectations after long breaks. Description: Mentor teacher will observe classroom management in the mentees room. A time will be scheduled to have discussion. If necessary a time can be scheduled for the mentee to visit other classrooms to observe management in this month. 8. Month: February Topic: Differentiating instruction in the classroom Rationale: Teacher begins to understand the needs of each learner in his/her classroom. Teacher begins meeting the needs of each learner by differentiating assignments and teaching techniques. Who will present: Lead teacher/mentor Goals: Mentee will observe a classroom during small group instruction. Mentee will understand how students can work in small group or individually while teacher is presenting to a small group to fit their needs. Mentee will understand how small group instruction is planned and why. Description: Mentee will observe classroom workshop. Mentee will follow up with the teacher to understand how the topic and students were selected for the instruction. Observed teacher can also articulated the changes they have seen in students from implementing differentiation. Planning tips can be provided by the observed teacher. Month: March Topic to be decided by Mentor and Mentee if necessary Context: Staff development that improves the learning of all students requires resources to support adult learning and collaboration. Month: April Topic: Processing MEAP/NWEA data Rationale: Teacher will understand how to read MEAP and NWEA data. Teacher will use the data to create plans for the remainder of the year and set goals for next year. Who will present: Dean Goals: Teachers will learn to use data to address grade level and individual student needs. Using the data to drive instruction is essential to student growth. Description: Dean will provide a MEAP classroom report with item analysis. Dean will provide NWEA MAP data and RIT range report. Together they will discuss and build a plan. Month: May Topic: End of the year procedures Rationale: Teachers need to know how to close out the school year successfully in order to avoid added stress. Who will present: Teacher leader/Mentor Goals: Teachers will learn the essential components of closing out the school year with success. Pacing out the many procedures to completing the school year is essential. Understanding in advance what needs to be done helps prevent unnecessary complications. Description: Mentor will provide a checklist of procedures for closing out the school year. The checklist will include a timeline. The mentor teacher can provide feedback on how to make end of the year procedures go smoothly.

Month: June Topic: Review progress and view 2nd year plan Rationale: It is important for new teachers to reflect on the year and the success and failures. New teachers should be able to provide input on the mentor/mentee program and goals for the next year. Who will present: Dean Goals: Together the Dean and teacher will look over the end of the year evaluation to discuss success and areas of improvement. At this time it is important to take feedback from the mentee on the induction program and the plan for year two. Description: The Dean will provide the new teacher with the end of the year evaluation in its draft form. The teacher has the ability to discuss any areas of concern and provide evidence of success if necessary. The evaluation will then be completed and signed. The Dean will provide the goals for year two. The new teacher can provide feedback on what they would like to add or change. The Dean will provide a questionnaire for the new teacher to evaluate the induction program. Goals for years 2, 3 and 4: Year 2 1. Teachers will become more involved with school committees and activities.

2. Teachers will be able to show growth in school procedures related to Individualized Education Plans and Special Education Services and Policies. 3. Teachers will be able to demonstrate small group instruction/differentiation within the classroom. 4. Teacher will demonstrate the effective use of the school wide discipline plan. 5. Teacher will demonstrate effective classroom management by creating important rules and procedures.

Year 3 1. Teachers will be proficient in understanding the use of formative, summative assessments and how to use them to make instructional decisions. 2. Teachers will be able to assume a larger role in making decisions regarding the classroom curriculum and instructional practices. 3. Teachers will be proficient at using technology in the classroom to enhance organization and student learning. Year 4 1. Teachers will take on leadership role within the school such as heading a committee or running an assembly/school event. 2. Teacher will demonstrate effective parent communication on parent surveys. (Generated by NHA Data Department) Evaluation: The induction plan that we created covers all aspects of the NSDE/Learning Forward Standards. The new teachers at National Heritage Academies will encounter many different experiences that will assist them in moving forward in their career as a competent, knowledgeable, well-rounded educator in an environment that is conducive to the adult learner. In our development of our induction program we relied heavily on the following standards: 1. Context Standards

In year two through four it would be appropriate to incorporate more of an opportunity to include standards that focus on family involvement, design, equity and leadership. In addition, we would want to incorporate more decision making on the part of the mentee in regards to his/her own development. Overall we provided a well rounded induction program with the essential components of North Saginaw Charter Academy and the Learning Forward Standards.
