British writer Anatol Lieven has been a leading apologist for the Pakistan Military in the West. He recently led two former US ambassadors to Pakistan and retired generals to attack the academic Ayesha Siddiq for her allegations that the ISI had infiltrated US think tanks. His criticism of Ayesha Siddiq must be seen in the context of his relationship with the Pakistan Military.
Here he is describing the worst of Pakistan's military dictators, Gen. Zia in a piece for The Times, London, a day after the jihadi general died in an air crash:
"He [Gen. Zia] won respect even from some of his political enemies for his lack of vindictiveness. It was said his repression , unlike that of his predecessor stopped with individuals and was not extended to attempts to destroy their families. From that point of view he had some claim..to be remembered as an honourable man."
