SYLLABUS AR-301: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN-III


OBJECTIVES:

To understand and, to apply the principles of architectural composition (organised physical structure) in design. The objectives of Arch. Design in the 1st semester were concerned with space and form and formal transformations. The objective of Arch. Design in the 2nd semester was to study space and activity. The continuation of this leads to understanding of architecture as an outcome of space and structure Use of appropriate presentation techniques to explain the contents of design. Developing drawing, graphic and model making and oral presentation skills.

CONTENTS: Understanding relationship of human scale, activity, space and form in mono-functional buildings:

Suggested studio exercises: Creative design of simple buildings with simple activities of multiple users on one Floor level, such as House for professionals or celebrity with special need, e.g. Doctor, Lawyer, Artist, architects, etc., Community halls, Restaurants, College Canteens, Reading rooms etc. Suggested Studio Exercises: Design of buildings having primarily horizontal circulation and repetitive units such as nursery and primary schools, Motels, way-side tourist arcades and kiosks.

Note: The studio exercises in addition to the above should also have at least one time problem as a preparation for the examination. APPROACH: Lectures with slide and field visits on similar design. Study Models to supplement each stage of development of design for greater understanding of Stress on working in the studios and referencing in Library. Educational tours must be undertaken and students be asked to submit tour reports to be evaluated. Note: The subject will be taught by at least one teacher for every 20 students

NOTE FOR CONDUCT OF EXAMINATIONS: The duration of Examination for this subject is 6x2 =12 hours .The examination shall be held over two days. The drawings completed on the first day shall be left in the examination hall and shall be completed and submitted on the second day.

AR-302: CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS-III


OBJECTIVES: To introduce and familiarize the student with constituents, manufacturing process/ availability, properties/ characteristics, defects, classifications and uses of traditional building materials used in construction. To understand the use of these building materials in simple building work.

CONTENTS: MATERIALS: Surface Finishing: Floor Finishing: Plastering, Jointing & Pointing and Painting. Brick flooring, Cement Concrete, Stone, Terrazzo Ceramic & Vitrified Tiles, Wooden.

Glass & Glass Products

Translucent, Transparent and special glasses. Glass blocks, Tiles, Mirrors, Glass wool etc. GLASS FIBRE CONSTRUCTION:

CONSTRUCTION: Brickwork Continued: Woodwork Continued: Cavity Walls. Doors- Types & Construction of Doors: Panelled doors, Partly Glazed & Panelled Doors, Flush doors, Glazed or Sash Doors, Mosquito proof Shutters, Sliding Door, Sliding Folding Doors etc. Windows- Types & Construction of Windows: Hinged Windows, Sliding Windows, Louvered Windows, Bay Windows and Casement Windows. Design and construction of Staircases- Types of Staircases, Basic Elements of staircase (Riser, Tread, Banister, Balustrade, Handrails etc.), Designing of staircases in timber.

Staircase:

APPROACH: The students would be familiarized with vernacular terminology prevalent in this part of the country. The emphasis will be on construction details as applicable to Indian conditions. Site visits and market surveys will be integral part of sessional work.

AR-303: ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURES-III


OBJECTIVES: To understand the analysis of indeterminate structures and their use in field. FIXED END BEAMS: Introduction, Analysis of continuous beams, Reactions at the supports, Effects of sinking of supports. Introduction, Potential energy, General Principles, Principles of superposition. Introduction, Analysis of indeterminate beams and continuous beams.

APPROACH: The lectures by the experts in the field of design and analysis will be arranged to make students exposure to practical aspect of design.

AR-304: ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING-III


OBJECTIVES: To develop greater perception of complex Architectural forms and buildings. To develop innovative skills for presenting Architectural Drawings (like plan, elevation etc.) in different media. To develop the skill of making perspectives of complex buildings and Rendering them in different media. To develop the skills free hand sketching.

CONTENTS: Sciography: Shades and Shadows of objects and building elements cast on irregular surfaces, rendered in suitable medium. Shades and shadows in perspective views and for exterior and interiors. Shades and Shadows cast by point source of light in interiors. Perspective Drawing: One point and Two-point perspective views, using measure point method, of simple & medium sized buildings- isolated or in-group, showing shades and shadow using different media like-Pencil, PenInk, Water Colour, Poster, and Airbrush etc. Other innovative methods of perspective presentation techniques should be encouraged. One point and two point perspective drawing of interiors rendered in different media. Introduction to short cut methods in perspective drawing. Free hand perspective. Presentation: Introduction to different textures and finishes in plan and elevation. Graphical representation of furniture, automobiles, human figure etc. in plans and elevation and 3-Dimension. Preparation of presentation drawings of small buildings, through Plans, Elevation, site plan etc., using various rendering techniques and media, incorporating sciography creating three dimensioned effect.

APPROACH: Emphasis on experimentation with different presentation techniques and medium in two dimensioned drawing and making building perspective, interior perspective. The free hand drawing and perspectives need be encouraged.

AR-305: ARTS & GRAPHICS-III


OBJECTIVES: To develop an appreciation of India Arts & Crafts among the students. To strengthen the skill of Architectural Rendering. To develop the skills to design smaller elements of building.

CONTENTS: Theory: Indian Art : Indus Valley Civilization, Six Limbs of Indian Art, Cave Paintings Contemporary arts in India and the works of: Abhinendra Nath Tagore, Naand Lal Bose, Amrita Shergill Exercises: Rendering in different media, Works of masters of Modern Architecture: Le-Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe, Frank Loyd Wright Rendering of students own works (AR-301) interior and exterior perspectives in Pen & Ink & Water Colours. Enlargement and Dot Rendering in Pen & Ink of Indian Decorative motifs. Preparation of collage and Murals for exterior and interior of the buildings such as waiting areas in hotels, schools and hospitals. Rendering 2D collage & Murals in poster colour & mixed medium & 3D collage & murals in ceramic tiles & waste materials. Design for window grills and jalis and railings in steel, balustrades in wood, pre-cast concrete and rendered with HB,2b,4b,6b pencils. Preparation in clay the design for concrete jails for use in buildings.
APPROACH:

The theory part of the course shall be an overview covered through audiovisual lectures delivered by experts in the field. Studio exercises of graphic composition shall be in the form of drawing, collages and models.

The students shall be taught to handle various mediums in studio work as part of development of arts and graphic skills. The examination paper shall be to test the knowledge and understanding of the student for each distinct part of the syllabus.

AR-306: HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE-I


OBJECTIVES: Understanding of the period in terms of its context of location, climate as well as the socio-cultural, historical, economic and political influences of the time. Study of the building types and the development of architectural form and character based on the developments in construction and technology exemplified through specific building examples that identify the works of the period. Understanding the intentions of the period and architects as a solution to the need or demands of the period. CONTENTS: INTRODUCTION: Primitive Beginnings: Introduction to history and architecture with special emphasis on stone age to Neolithic settlements in Europe and around with examples from Carnac and Stonehenge.

HISTORY OF CIVILIZATIONS: Birth of Civilization: Egyptian: In reference to the Asia-minor region with nascent cities like Jericho, Catalhoyuk, and Hattasus etc. Particularly in reference to early tomb architecture and later temple architecture with examples like Great pyramids of Cheops, Mastabas, Funery temples and, later temples like Khons etc. With special attention to cities of Mesopotomian like Ninveh, Khorsahbad, Marie, Babylon, and architectural constructs like Ziggurat. With reference to cities in Aegean like Troy, Sparta, Mycenae, which formed the basic of Greek civilization. Particularly in reference to the town planning principles exemplified with examples from Mohenjodaro and Harappa. With its emphasis on the Vedic town plan, its motifs and patterns. In specific reference to the lats, eddicts, stupas, viharas, and chaityas, both in rock-cut or otherwise. With special attention to the evolution of the temple form, the shikhara in north India. Reference also to be made to the three schools of architecturethe Gujarat, the Khajuraho, and the Orrisan styles. Particularly in reference to the evolution of the vimana and the contributions of the Chalukyas, the Pallavas, the Pandyas and Cholas as well as the contributions of the Nayaks to the temple cities. With specific reference to the temple cities of Palitana and Girnar.

Lectures could be specifically conducted with the visual aids and seminars presented by students. Written assignments and seminar presentations could be made by students on the architectural characteristics that identify the building types as well as intentions of the period in response to its context and demands of the time. Free hand sketches and orthographic drawings could made by students in the tutorials on specific building examples to familiarize them with the architectural character that identify the works of the particular period.

AR-307: COMPUTER APPLICATIONS TO ARCHITECTURE-III


OBJECTIVES: To introduce various software to the students helping them in compilation of their text/reports etc. To enable the students to understand the role of various data storing devices such as scanners, Digitizers etc. and their applications.

CONTENTS: Learning M.S.OFFICE: Basic Command to operate the components of M.S. Office such as M.S. Word. Knowledge about DTP Techniques in M.S. Word. Use of various command to make charts, graphs, tables, to help students compile their reports in M.S. Word. Exporting & importing work done in other softwares and using of Clip Art and making elementary shapes in M.S. Word. Use of Mail Merge in M.S. Word. Learning the other components of M.S. office like M.S. Excel, M.S. Power Point. Etc. Presentation in M.S. Power point in making slides etc. Making work sheets in M.S. Excel. Using Photo editing soft wares such as Adobe Photoshop, Photo editor etc. Familiarizing the students with AutoCAD , Basic commands of AutoCAD, Use of scanners, printers, plotters, their hardware and other related systems

Suggested Exercises: Compiling reports inclusive of Tables, Charts, and Text etc. Logo design using M.S. Word. Slide Presentations. Photo editing sessions. Setting up Drawing (2D), Scale and Print Command etc. Making simple drawings and Plan of small buildings.

APPROACH: The emphasis shall be to enable the student to name M.S. Office and the other related software to help in the compilation of his reports and other text related exercises. To give the student a deep understanding of the software and hence helping in the formation of a strong base for the complicated and other drawing related software.

AR-401: ARCHITECHTURAL DESIGN-IV
OBJECTIVES: To understand and, Design Simple buildings for moderately complex activities for multiple users on different levels. Use of appropriate presentation techniques to explain the contents of design. Developing drawing, graphic and model making and oral presentation skills. CONTENTS: Understanding relationship of human scale, activity, space and form in multi-family residential buildings:

Suggested studio exercises: Creative design of simple buildings with simple activities of multiple users, such as Bungalows, semi-detached, Duplex houses, Row houses etc., Suggested Studio Exercises: Design of buildings having horizontal and vertical circulation in buildings of moderately complex activities multiple users on more level - such as Club houses, Resorts, Religious buildings, Marriage Halls/Banquet halls etc., Study and documentation of a village or a small community/neighbourhood for its architectural design of residential units and community activities

Small Educational excursions must be undertaken and students be asked to submit reports showing their observations on the buildings visited with a view to critical appraisal thereof and these reports must be evaluated as part of the sessional assignments.

AR-402: CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS-IV


OBJECTIVES:

AR-404: HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE-II


OBJECTIVES: Understanding of the period in terms of its location, climate as well as the socio-cultural, historical, economic and political influences of the time. Study of the building types and the development of architectural form and character based on the developments in construction and technology exemplified through specific building examples that identify the works of the period.

CONTENTS: Introduction: Introduction and understanding of Islams philosophy and its interpretation in building type e.g. mosque, tomb, fort and their elements like domes, minarets, arch, squinch etc. With reference to the Slave, Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid, Lodhis and Shershah Suri regimes (who ruled from Delhi) and their architecture. Development of colloquial styles in various provinces of India like Punjab, Jaunpur, Gujrat, Bengal, Bijapur, Bidar and Deccan. Morphology of fortified cities of Jaisalmer, fort/ palaces like Mandu, Chittorgarh, Orchha, Datia, Jodhpur etc. with an overview on architectural types like havelis, stepwells, gates, baradaris etc. The architecture of the Timurids in India- Babur, Hamayun, Akhbar, Jahangir and Shahjahan. The Oudh architecture in Lucknow and its surroundings briefly outlining the Lucknow city. The British architecture of the colonial days in India- the capitol at Delhi and the residency at Lucknow emphasizing on their planning criteria and architectural features.

AR-405: CLIMATOLOGY
OBJECTIVES: To acquaint the students about human thermal comfort as an essential function of a building and its analysis and use in Architecture.

CONTENTS: Introduction to Climate: Importance of climate in Architecture, Factors affecting climate, Elements of climate, Solar radiation, Temperature, Wind, Humidity and precipitation and their measurement. Climatic zones, characteristics Macroclimate and Microclimate. of tropical climate,

Human Thermal Comfort:

Study of bodys heat production and heat loss, Comfort zone, Bioclimatic chart and effective temperature, Isopleths. Studay Study of Mohoneys Tables and anlaysis. Method of recording position of sun in relation to earth, Solar chart, Shadow angle protractor and its application in designing of shading devices. Natural lighting, Glare, day light factor and day lighting in tropics. Requirement, size and position of openings, Air-flow pattern inside and outside buildings. Orientation of buildings in relation to sun and wind. Study of diurnal & seasonal variations, heating & cooling effects, effect of topography, effect of wind on location of industrial areas, airports & other land uses & road patterns.

AR-406: BUILDING SERVICES (WATER SUPPLY)


OBJECTIVES: To understand the basic principles of water supply and sanitation. To make them enable to draw the piping system (pipe above ground and under ground) for different types of buildings. To familiarize the student with plumbing bye laws as per ISI.

CONTENTS: Water Supply: Need to protect water supply and requirements of water supply to different types of buildings. Sources of water supply, quantity and quality of water and treatment plants. Conveyance and distribution of water overhead tank under ground tanks pipe appurtenances. Hot and cold water supply system in a low rise and high rise buildings, distribution system in campus, pipes their size, jointing and different fittings. Fire water supply, Wet & dry stand pipes, automatic fire sprinkler system. Purpose and principles of sanitation, collection and conveyance of waste matter. Quantity and Quality of refuse, design and construction of sewers and sewer appurtenances, roof and surface water drainage. Sanitary appliances, traps their variety, pipes and joints, sanitary pipes works below and above ground level. Drainage in non-municipal area. Rain waters storage and water harvesting principles and methods. Solid Waste Management: Types of garbage, Disposal & Management (Landfills & Treatment). The water supply and sanitary system individual and group of buildings. Indian standards for designing the toilet /Kitchen. Plumbing by-laws. Designing of toilet blocks in residential buildings (showing both European & Indian W.C.s) & in public buildings, Preparation of working drawings showing complete details of fittings & plumbing required for water supply & drainage. Description & suitability of roads. Drainage Sub drains, culverts, ditches, gutters, drop inlets & catch basins.

AR-407: COMPUTER APPLICATIONS TO ARCHITECTURE


OBJECTIVES:

To develop an understanding of the design based software like Auto Cad, Coral Draw and Adobe Photoshop. Learning the application of the above said software in design exercises so as to make use of maximum commands.

CONTENTS:

Understanding AutoCAD:

Continuing to Learn various 2D commands their function and application. Working on layers and Colours. Drawing plans, Elevations, Sections using Auto Cad. Dimensioning Drawings. Connecting from one file format to another Various file formats and their usefulness. Learn various commands their functions and application Putting text & images together in various settings, Importing & exporting documents Learn various commands & their functions and applications

Understanding Coral Draw:

Suggested Exercises: Drawing the entire set of drawings for an already designed residence using Auto Cad. Design and draw a logo with the help of Coral draw including Textures and Colours.(May be use if as a letter head.)
