Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Enlargement Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able

e to enlarge an object to a positive integer scale factor. Most students should be able to enlarge an object to a scale factor and centre. Some students should be able to perform and describe an enlargement using a positive scale factor. Keywords: Enlarge, Scale Factor, Centre Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students review similarity of shapes and angles in a triangle to identify which triangle the odd one is out. Adding calculated information to each diagram and rearranging them to the same orientation will help. Have the students justify their decisions to each other to promote discussion and sharing of alternative approaches. Development To enlarge an object each length is multiplied by the scale factor. A common misconception is to either add the scale factor to each length or multiply one side but not the others. When a centre is involved the ray method could be used or the x and y distance between the each vertex to the centre is multiplied by the scale factor. One method can be used to check the other. Use the interactive Geogebra file to illustrate the enlargements. To aid pace, students could be given the worksheet to work on at the same time as the teacher. Once the enlargements on the second slide have been demonstrated the students should be able to progress through the problems on the third slide independently. Again, the interactive Geogebra file can be used to provide feedback. Plenary The plenary challenges the class to describe an enlargement by determining its scale factor and centre. This is best given as a hand-out as the students may use the ray method to locate the centre of enlargement. Have solutions presented on mini-whiteboards for assessment and feedback. Differentiation More able: Students could consider the area of the enlarged shape to the original and identify the change in scale factors. Less Able Students may need to stick with integer scale factors without the centre before progressing onto more complex enlargements. Resources: Mini-Whiteboards Interactive Geogebra File
