Internet Assignment 8 Many countries around the world believe in having people only know one language, other

countries believe in knowing multiple languages, while some countries fall in the middle. However, the United States is one of the countries that believe in monolingualism, which means we only know one language instead of bilingualism, which is where you know two languages. In the past in the United States being bilingual usually got a person classified as being poor, stupid, and uneducated. But politics, religion, race, and self-concept also place a huge role in this. Attitudes toward bilingualism also depend on a persons social status. If a person or group is not looked well on then their language may not be well received. Also, in the U.S. since the dominate language is English everyone must have a basic concept of the language to survive, like being able to get a job. For example, when Hispanics work at a fast food restaurant and they dont speak English very well it takes forever to order your food and they tend to get your order wrong. But from the other side, the minorities who speak those other languages my get offended by the native English speakers and when they get written off.
