COURSE POLICIES___________________________________________________________ Attendance policies This course is 100% online. Students are expected to spend at least 22 hours per week learning and studying during a 6-week class. For distance learners, this includes logging in to Blackboard, reading and viewing provided material, reading the textbook, completing assignments, and interacting with the instructor and other students.

Participation requirements Students are required to meet with the instructor during one of the provided Lync opportunities listed above or by making an appointment at least one week prior to the meeting time. In addition, students will interact in groups in real time via Lync as well as through other online synchronous tools chosen by the group. Students will communicate asynchronously on the course discussion boards through original postings and by responding to the postings of others. Participation with the instructor and with other students is a requirement of this course. Topics Module 1: Module 2: Module 3: Module 4: Module 5: Module 6: History of technology use in the classroom Curriculum planning Logistics and organization Word processing Group projects Presentation software

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES________________________________________________ Module 1: History of technology use in the classroom Required reading: Chapters 1 and 2 in the textbook Module 1 link on Blackboard

Students will read the information contained in chapters 1 and 2 of the textbook and view the pictorial timeline http://www.edudemic.com/2011/04/classroom-technology/. Using www.timetoast.com students will create original timelines, including pictures, depicting the history of technology use in education and ending with present day use in the classroom. They will create a website using https://sites.google.com, http://www.weebly.com/, or other free option, and post their timeline for other students to view. On the discussion board for Module 1, students will post personal introductions that include the links to their websites. Students will interview two teachers, one new and one veteran teacher, regarding their experiences with technology. They will compare and contrast the experiences of these two teachers in a 200-word paragraph and create a Venn diagram with the information using https://www.lucidchart.com/pages/examples/venn_diagram_maker. The paragraphs and the links to the Venn diagrams will be posted on their websites. The scheduled Lync appointments this week will focus on questions/discussion regarding Module 1 assignments and ideas for integrating the technology used this week into the classroom.

Module 2: Curriculum planning Required reading: Chapter 3 in the textbook Module 2 link on Blackboard

After reading chapter 3, students will access module 2 information that contains the link to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Technology Applications http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter126/ch126a.html. The instructor sent emails to students to let them know which group they will work with for this module. The group will use email to make original meeting arrangements. Students may use Lync or Skype www.skype.com for synchronous discussions. Each group will choose one of the six strands in technology applications from the TEKS, designate the grade level of their choice, and email the instructor with this information. Students will then create a week of original lesson plans using www.planboardapp.com. Throughout this activity, students will use www.docs.google.com to aide in collaboration. Students will refer to the provided grading rubric in Module 2 as they create their plans. Lessons plans must require technology use each day. When the lesson plans are completed, students will use the share feature of the online lesson planner to access the link. This link to their lesson plans will be posted on the discussion board for Module 2 and placed on each of their websites. Each student will submit a paragraph to the instructor through the assignment tab on Blackboard describing how their group worked together and the contributions of each group member. The scheduled Lync appointments this week will focus on questions/discussion regarding Module 2 assignments and ideas for integrating technology into core subject TEKS. Module 3: Logistics and Organization Required reading: Chapter 5 in the textbook Module 3 link in Blackboard

Students will read chapter 5 in the textbook and Module 3 information. Included in Module 3 are two articles http://www.businessweek.com/stories/2008-12-16/rethinking-computers-in-theclassroombusinessweek-business-news-stock-market-and-financial-advice and http://www.ion.uillinois.edu/resources/tutorials/overview/weaknesses.asp. Using information from the text and the above articles, students will create a table demonstrating problems a teacher may encounter with integrating technology into the classroom and then explain the possible solutions. This table will be posted to their individual websites. Students will develop a floor plan with technology in mind for their future classrooms. This can be as creative as they wish but must keep technical issues in mind (such as space, electricity, and Internet connections). Students will use Classroom Architect to demonstrate their design ideas. http://classroom.4teachers.org/. Shapes must be labeled with details and scaled logically. Students will compose a list of behavior expectations related to technology use. Using SlideShare www.slideshare.net each student will create a slideshow with a minimum of 10 slides explaining the classroom design and the list of behavior expectations. The link to the Slideshare will be posted on the Module 3 discussion board and the student websites. The scheduled Lync appointments this week will focus on questions/discussion regarding Module 3 assignments and problems/solutions to classroom organization involving technology.

Module 4: Word processing Required reading: Chapter 7 in the textbook Module 4 link in Blackboard Students will create posters demonstrating age-appropriate step-by-step instructions for opening and creating word documents for either grades K-2 or 3-5. Pictures may be more appropriate than words, or a combination may be used. Completed posters will be placed on students websites. Students will explore online keyboarding games such as those on http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/keyboarding_games.html and programs such as http://www.typingweb.com. They will produce a database of these resources using http://www.zoho.com/creator/online-database-software.html. Students will post links to their database on their websites. Students will then access www.penpalworld.com. After studying the site, they will create plans for integrating word processing skills into the use of online classroom pen pals. Students will create VoiceThreads at www.voicethread.com, using images, documents, and/or videos to demonstrate their plans. In pairs, students will view partners VoiceThreads and leave comments. Links to VoiceThreads will be posted on the Module 4 assignment tab on Blackboard and placed on students websites. The scheduled Lync appointments this week will focus on questions/discussion regarding Module 4 assignments and ideas for teaching and using word processing in the elementary classroom. Module 5: Group projects Required reading: Chapter 9 in the textbook Module 5 link in Blackboard Students will search the Internet and choose a lesson plan that does not use technology for this module. The link will be sent to the instructor via Blackboard email. Students will view each of the links for interactive tools provided in Module 5, including such programs as Google Docs, Wikis, and Webslides. After familiarizing themselves with these tools, students will rewrite the chosen lesson plan and integrate group work activities that use one of the listed programs. Each student will create a simulation of the student group project from the lesson plan using the tool of choice from the above list. Students will then produce a rubric using http://rubistar.4teachers.org/ for assessing the group work that includes student evaluation of their individual contributions and the groups work. Students will post the following on their websites: link to original lesson plan, rewritten lesson plan utilizing technology, group work simulation (or link), and grading rubric. The scheduled Lync appointments this week will focus on questions/discussion regarding Module 5 assignments and ideas for rewriting lesson plans to include technology.

Module 6: Presentation software Required reading: Chapter 10 in the textbook Module 6 link in Blackboard http://www.visualbee.com/free/free-presentation-software.html http://prezi.com/ www.animoto.com http://www.sliderocket.com/ http://www.powtoon.com/ Students will create a chart comparing and contrasting the above free presentation software. Then they will choose one program and create a two-part presentation. For the first part, they will summarize what they have learned in this class. For the second part of the presentation, they will create surveys using http://www.surveymonkey.com/ with questions for educators based on their pre-service preparation for integrating technology in the curriculum, current technology use in their classrooms, and current knowledge in the field of technology. These questions will be emailed to the instructor before the survey begins. The instructor will email the student with corrections or permission to proceed. Students will synthesize the results of their surveys. The completed presentation will be turned in under the assignment tab for Module 6 in Blackboard. The scheduled Lync appointments this week will focus on questions/discussion regarding Module 6 assignments and use of presentation software in teaching and learning.
