BODY & NUTRITION SYLLABUS FOCUS

May/June Theme: Tourner Improving Pelvic Alignment: Part 2
By: Jennifer L. Deckert, M.F.A., University of Wyoming

Deviations from a neutral pelvis can be dened as anterior tilt (allowing the tailbone to are backwards) and posterior tilt (tucking the tailbone under).

Tourner means to turn. This month we will focus on entournant in all movements both adagio and allegro. We will be working on pirouette making sure we are using proper technical execution. Our most advanced dancers will continue to work on multiple turns landing in both closed and open positions.

STUDENT ACTIVITY
! Though both deviations are common among dancers, anterior pelvic tilt has become a common and often accepted technique fault among ballet dancers. The traditional approach of addressing the misalignment in technique class does not always serve to decrease it. Furthermore, miscuing dancers to squeeze their gluteal muscles as per classical ballet convention may only lead to overdeveloped gluteal muscles. Dancers with anterior pelvic tilt may also suffer from tight hip exors and lower back pain. The answer to how best to decrease anterior pelvic tilt and effectively recruit muscles is multifaceted and individualized to each dancer. Several studies have found success with the use of Pilates-based and Somaticsbased exercises.
