Defining Moment in BMT/PTP The most defining moment in my life in BMTC was the rifle presentation ceremony.

It was my first time holding a real rifle and I have learnt many things about life during the ceremony. To me, the rifle represented the official start of my life as a soldier. From an ordinary civilian to a soldier, this was a major change and it was hard to adapt to the new life initially. The rifle also told me that I should have a sense of responsibility for everything I have in my life. Before enlistment, I took everything for granted and did not bother about anything. I have lost and messed up certain things in life and I regretted it. The sense of responsibility in each and every one of us is very important, both during national service and life after that. It will allow us to do things successfully and correctly. Besides the rifle, we were presented with the SAF Core Values Book. Discipline is one of the most impactful core values to me. In SAF Ferry Terminal, there is a banner that has a quote, Discipline Will you persevere when the others have given up. Ever since I received the book, I have tried to constantly remind myself this value because I believe that is the only way for a person to succeed and excel in life. When I was studying, I always give up when I encounter problems that I cannot solve and in the end, I accomplish nothing in the end. I told myself not to repeat this mistake and start anew once I enlist into the army. Giving up should never be an option because there are many people out there who want to see you succeed in life. Throughout the 3 months stay in BMTC, there were definitely tough times and they needed to be overcome. The only way to continue was not to give up and I am glad that I didnt and made it through. After presented with these two items, we were told to recite the Singapore Armed Forces pledge in front of the famous statue of BMTC. It reminded me again that I am an official member of the army. I know that life from then is going to be very different and there are certain things that I definitely have to sacrifice in my normal life such as freedom while serving the National Service. The pledge and the statue also taught me about loyalty to the country, to stand for what is important to us, such as our home, Singapore. It is also a life lesson that I have learnt. Not only to the country, we must also stand for what is important to us such as family, moral values and character. The infantry statue taught me and my friends the value of friendship and brotherhood. As an infantry, no one fight as an individual. Everyone will fight together as one and my friends are the brothers that will fight alongside with me in everything. Brotherhood is very important and we must always work together to overcome any challenges ahead and not leave anyone behind. We must not have any conflicts with one another because how can we fight together if theres fighting among one another. These were the things that I have learnt throughout this ceremony. These life lessons will definitely make National Service much more meaningful and all these values and morals are of course, beneficial for me when I leave here to carry on with my normal civilian life. These are the things that you cannot really learn in other occasions.
