Fourth Grade Scope and Sequence-Four Quarters Michael Post Liberty University
FOURTH GRADE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE-FOUR QUARTERS A scope and sequence is a useful planning and development tool for a district, school, and especially for teachers. It helps to prepare and create a mindset for the direction of the school year and classroom. The scope sequence created here is based upon the newest set of standards, the Common Core Standards. Many states have adopted these guidelines as a design to prepare students for higher learning and citizenry. These standards are more project-based than some standards from previous years and venues.
Many standards are similar from focus to focus and might be covered in one standard for both to help compare and clarify the differences. Several standards are not necessarily a focus for a few weeks, but a focus for the entire school year and even school career; these might include writing skills, language convention and reading fluency and accuracy. Order of standards may be a bit subjective depending on text, curriculum and students. Teachers and planners need to remain flexible. Settings up standards are especially important when new standards are implemented. A teacher might, rather than get concerned that they need to create all new lessons and preparation consider where the standards are actually similar, and a previous might just need a tweak to allow it to support the teacher and students. Preparing a scope and sequence can help a teacher prepare, manage, and collaborate with district and grade level colleagues. It takes some time and effort but should help a teacher throughout the year, in class and in preparation.
