Answer guide for O Level Physics (5054/4) – Paper 4 Alternative to Practical June 2000

1(a)(i) To prevent the card from sticking / so that the card’s centre of mass
is behind the plumb-line / so that the centre of mass of the card is
below the pivot 1
(ii) Arranged so that the line of sight is perpendicular (vertical allowed)
to the plumb-line (or card) 1
(iii) It helps to avoid parallax / it helps to obtain the correct positio for
making marks or drawing on the card (‘easily’ is not sufficien for a
mark) 1
(b) Choice Z 1
Reason The angle between the lines is large(st) / the diagram
showing near perpendicular lines or similar clear reason 1
Accurate location of the centre of mass / ‘sharpness’ or ‘clarity’ of
intersection / on a diagram 1

2(a) ‘Three’ near perfect lines (straight, neat and through C) (additional
lines are not penalised) 1
(b) ‘Below’ or equivalent 1
(c) Any three from:
Real
Inverted
Enlarged
Ratio of separation of images same as that for object holes
v longer than u 2
Any two (1)
(d) Line from N through C misses the screen / the screen is too small for
the image of N to be formed
(A correct line on the diagram can be accepted) 1

3(a) ± 0.25 degree for the position of the required lines at 60.5 o C and at
± 1.8 o C 1
(b)(i) Suitable hot body having a larger thermal capacity
(metal or liquid in container with a lid) 1
Plus a means to insert a thermometer 1
(ii) Suitable means of support that will work 1
(iii) Temperature recorded from 100 o C to 40 o C for each 1
(c) Shielding has the lowest rate of cooling or 1.1 < 1.4 < 1.8 or 1.1 <
the other two rates 1

4(a) Labelled table 1

Units for t and T 1
(b)(i) T is very small or approximately 0.7 s for W = 5 1
Timing errors reduced / accurate by using more oscillations/ correct
reference to 28 s 1
(ii) Mass / weight / volume / thickness / inertia 1
(c) 0.87 s (the value for 2 ∫ washers) 1

5(a) V x p is not constant 1

(b)(i) Correct, labelled axes including scaling
Easy to use and occupying at least half the space provided 1
Plotting to the nearest ∫ small square 1
Good line judgement relative to the plotted points, neat and thin 1
(ii) Method clear using at least half the line if straight or appropriate
tangent if curved 1
Accurate interpolation, nearest half small square of grid 1
Presentation, correct arithmetic rounded to 2 or 3 s.f. 1
