Micro-Lesson Spring 2013

Behavioral Objective: By the end of the 7 minute lesson, the students will be able to sing and perform an original musical setting and dance of the classic nursery rhyme, Hey Diddle, Diddle. Materials: Poster with the poem written on it For older students, a notation sheets that shows the rhythm of the poem (hand-outs) Procedure: 1. Ask the students what their favorite nursery rhymes were as a child (give time for responses) 2. Introduce Hey Diddle, Diddle (does anyone remember this one?) a. Hold up poster with words as you read; point to the words as you do **Ask advanced students to refer to the rhythm sheet as you read b. While referring to the rhythm sheet, ask students to speak the poem with you the second time through 3. Group Work: a. Split the class into 4 groups (2 melody; 2 movement)count off by 4 b. Assign the first three lines of the poem to group 1 and ask them to create an original melody that goes with the rhythm (GIVE starting pitch C4) c. Assign the final three lines of the poem to group 3 and ask them to create an original melody that goes with the rhythm (GIVE starting pitch C4) d. Assign the first three lines of the poem to group 2 and ask them to create an original dance or movement sequence that goes with the text e. Assign the final three lines of the poem to group 4 and ask them to create an original dance or movement sequence that goes with the text f. Give students 3 minutes to do this g. WHILE THEY ARE WORKING, circulate around to observe and help 4. Performance: a. Ask Groups 1 and 2 to stand together and Groups 3 and 4 to stand together b. Have everyone read the poem once together, then cue in Groups 1 and 2 on the repeat; they will perform their melody and dance c. After their 3 lines are done, cue in Groups 3 and 4 to do their melody and dance d. EXPLAIN all this thoroughly to the students in advance so as not to create chaos during the performance

Assessment Task: Observation during group work (3g.) Observation during performance (whos participating, whos asleep, etc.) If given a longer time period: Have the students teach each other their melodies and dances.
