Discuss with the class what they learned about Hua Mulan in their Topic lessons, especially what she did that was special (how she cut her hair (or tied it up) and pretended to be a man in order to fight in a war in place of her aging or disabled father). Inform them that they will create a picture of Hua Mulan using Kid Pix showing her with long and short hair. In Kid Pix, demonstrate to the class how to use the oval tool with a thin black line to draw Hua Mulans head and one eye. Explain that they should draw her head on the left half of the page. Show them how to use the selection tool to select the eye, and the copy and paste commands to create the second eye. Show how to move the second eye to the correct position. Review how to use the pencil tool to draw freehand with a thin black line, and demonstrate how to use it to finish the picture showing her with long hair. Show them how to select, copy and paste the finished picture and position it on the right half of the page. Show them how to use the Eraser to shorten the hair on the right-hand picture. [Next year, have them draw the head without hair, to copy it, and

then to add the long and short hairit was difficult for most of the children to erase the hair without erasing part of the face.] Review how to add a title, their name and their class with the Text tool. Discuss how the title should be the largest text on the page. Ask the students to follow my example and create the drawing in the same way, and to add Hua Mulan for a title at the top, and their name and class in smaller text at the bottom. Review how to save correctly (in their class folder with their name, class and Hua Mulan in the file name). Discuss with the children what they learned about writing instructions in their Topic lessons. Inform them that they will type instructions for how to create the picture of Hua Mulan. Using the IWB, demonstrate how to open Pages. Show them how to create a title and a numbered list. Ask the students for the steps they followed when creating the drawing. Type the instructions as they give them. Demonstrate how to enlarge the font size of the title. When finished, offer a condensed version of the list given by the students. Ask the students to type one of the lists in Pages, explaining that they should try to type the longer list if they feel they can type fast enough (encourage the more confident students to type the more detailed list).
